This rather rare Hoary Redpoll has been observed with the Common Redpolls at a feeding station in Western Ottawa...Quite a treat to see and photograph. The frostier look and tinier beak are two of the signs that its a Hoary vs a Common...Here are a few images and I will post a few more later...

Beautiful shots, Gary. I'll have to examine my flock of 60+ Common Redpolls to see if any are Hoary.

Beautiful photos, I've heard rumors about a Hoary being in my area so I appreciate the information on what to look for.

Nice shots Gary. I must have a closer look at the Redpolls that come to my feeder. I'm sure there are some lighter colour ones.

Sweet! I haven't seen a hoary in a couple of years...What a nice treat.
I like them all but the first one realy shows the detail you need to identify this bird.
Good Stuff!

Thanks Shirley and there are some common Redpolls that will look lighter/brighter...The Hoary's have a White Rump...very little to no streaking on the sides and that very very tiny beak. When you see one beside a common redpoll the size of beak is very telling...

Thanks Marc and this one and possibly another one or two are at Hilda...Its been there 4 out of the 4 last times I visited there. I agree the first one shows just about everything required to ID it as a Hoary and it is still one of my favourites of this bird but I do have quite a few new images that look like they might be good as well...will have to see.
