It won't even work well in XP if you have a new camera - look at what the page describes as "new":

(This release contains support for new cameras such as the Canon EOS 5D, Nikon D50, D70s, and others.)

Try this instead: http://www.arcsoft.com/products/rawviewer/

FYI... I tried the Arcview software; it tries to force you to register online (i.e, there is no way to skip it with any buttons). I just ended the task and the thumbnail viewer works fine.

I use the one provided by Canon. Works a treat.

Kevin, we're talking about viewing RAW thumbnails natively in Windows Explorer - you can't do that with Canon's software.

Mark, the Arcsoft software works on my Vista Premium lappy, if that's any encouragement.

I don't use Vista but under Windows XP I replaced the native Windows Explorer file manager with Directory Opus (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Intro.html) which uses DCRaw to create and preview RAW/DNG thumbnails.

Prior to that I used DPMagic Plus (http://www.dpmagic.com/products.html) for several years but it hasn't been updated for a while. The neat thing about DPMagic Plus is that it allowed you to rescale your thumbnails to any size you want.

Oh yes you can!
As TTk said ^^^^^ - Canon have released a Codec to allow you to do this. I have it and it works fine with Vista ;) :-)

Oh, that's encouraging. i'm running Vista Ultimate on my laptop. After installing the Arcsoft software, was there something else that I needed to do? thanks

Ah - thanks for the update, Kevin.

Mark,

no, all I did was install Arcsoft and the thumbnails just appeared next time I browsed a folder with RAWs in.

Since it lists the 5D as a "new" camera, I'd assume your 20D is covered. I use the RAW Thumbnail viewer in XP and my 350D RAWs show up perfectly.

Hi Keith

Just installed the Arcsoft thingy on XP. Doesn't work for me :(

Did you install it to any particular folder? I didn't, I just let it do its "thing."

As I recall, I just downloaded the installer file, set it going and it automatically created a folder in Program Files.

Thanks for that, but there's no mention of Windows XP on that Canon link.
Do you know if it will work with XP?

And Keith: The Arcsoft one is installed in Program Files - wonder why it wont work

Having followed all the tips in this forum, downloaded the microsoft RAW viewer stuff, followed by the arcsoft stuff. To my delight, all RAW files from my 400D now appear as excellent thumbnails in Windows explorer and (more importantly to me) in PSE 6. However I have hit a major snag. I can save as .jpeg and insert in outlook express but if I make the file an attachment and try to open it from there I get 'Fatal Execution error (0x7927f26e)' I'm going to pursue the problem elsewhere but, in view of the brains and experience on this forum I wondered whether anyone had hit this wall before?

Further to my last post, I had to restore to before I loaded the arcsoft s'ware, clicking on a CR2 icon still brought up the same error. Removing the MS RAW viewer was the next step and so I am back where I was.
Does Vista have this view feature built in?

I hate Vista with a passion. My Proshow Producer would not even burn a cd or dvd unless I first installed the program by right clicking the setup file and \"run as administrator\" then I had to run the program as administrator (even thought that is how I log in)..So wiped my hard drive clean and installed XP Pro..no more problems on any programs. Oh, under Vista I installed NIK Color effects plug in and that would not run unless I right clicked and ran as administrator. If your VISTA computer also comes in XP then I suggest wiping the hard drive and installing XP. I guess Microsoft got tired of hearing the gripes of Vista they put XP back out for sale on the shelves :)

Vista isn't that bad...the whole idea of Vista is to make sure that malicious applications can not make system changes without you knowing about it (and authorising it). The problem in the past is that Microsoft operating systems have always been run as root/adminstrator, and that's why security/viruses/worms/trojans are such HUGE issues on Windows boxes...Microsoft has made a genuine attempt to fix security issues, although UAC is not a good implentation imho. UNIX did it better near 40 years ago, and still does it better imho.

Onto the OP - I wouldn't touch the Microsoft RAW thumbnail viewer. I had a play with it around a year ago, and it just screws up being able to read the EXIF on the file in question (right click > properties). It did a few other funky things as well, but I can't remember exactly what they were now...it got removed pretty quickly. I did post on it some time ago though...

I have Vista on my laptop and it shows both RAW files as thumbnails and brings them up in the Windows Gallery viewer -- I keep up-to-date on updates, but I don't use my laptop/Vista as my workstation.

On my XP workstation, I don't care about Windows and my RAW files since I handle them in Lightroom. I do have utilities installed so that I can see RAW thumbnails in Windows Explorer, but it really means nothing to me.

Yes I just added the RAW codec in Vista Gallery Update. I can see thumbnails of all my RAW files with no added software. Mind I cannot manipulate them but I can see them. I did this on a fresh install from Vista itself.

I installed LR to play around with them. Vista allows you to upload new codecs for tons of file formats..canon, nikon, etc.
