If you have a minute, there is a photo posted on www.harrybenson.com/ (http://www.harrybenson.com/) that I just don't quite understand. I can't link it directly, but it is under "Portfolios -Tivoli - photo #2, with a crop at #3.

This photo is fascinating to me. In a scene full of whirling motion and diminishing natural light, there is this child's face, by all comparisons, tack sharp. It's not a DOF. Flash maybe? I would not rule out a lucky snap, but considering the photographer, let's call it a captured opportunity in time.

My only guess is this was the object moving toward the lens. Any other thoughts here?

The face came out clearly because of a flash being fired, as you guessed. There was a long enough shutter speed to get a nice blurred look from the ambient light and the flash lit the child to give that still image.
