View Full Version : I don't deserve my camera

The other day I told a story of going out at sunrise and getting 1/1000 shutter speeds - because I was playing with ISO 3200 the night before and I forgot to switch it back. That happened last December. I haven't done anything nearly as stupid since then.

Until lately...

The other day I *had* to take some pictures. I just had to use the new camera and new lens.

I shot 62 pics of birds. All on small JPEG. The night before I had shown my wife what 5 fps was like....

And today. Something I could actually kick myself about....

CDS and I had some great photo ops at some Semipalmated Sandpipers & Semipalmated Plover today. They're both small birds, maybe 5" tall. We were laying on some rocks above the high tide line and they just came towards us. After a bit they were too close - the new lens (Canon 400 Prime) has a much longer minimum focus than the 100-400. I had to stop taking pictures because they got too close.

The birds got too close! That's like a dream for bird photographers.

Well.... I was just packing my lens away after cleaning it, and saw a little switch. The switch choose min focus distance, either 3.5m - Infinity, or 8m - Infinity.

Guess which setting I had....

Yep. My mother raised idiots. No doubt.

Somewhere along the geneline we are related. I cannot count the number of times I've done the same thing. Just ask Sheldon.

At least you've got the hard stuff mastered - like inserting a flash card or taking off the lens cap.

I won't mention the gazillion pics I took yesterday with -1 ec that I didn't notice was there. Just exactly the thing one wants with late afternoon pics - more darkness.

lol...

I leave that switch "off" on my 70-200...not so much because i'd forget about it, but because if the action ever comes that close i dont want to have to change any settings.

And with a 1D (and i can now give an honerable mention to the 20D) and USM...how much time am i really going to save, ya know?

Leaving the switch "OFF" does no good .. it seems I bump these switches every time I pull the camera out of the bag.. the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS is the worst of the bunch.. the switches are designed to get switched off every time you sneeze!

AF, Foucs limit, or IS.. one of them is allway s off.. no matter what.

Ain't that the truth! I don't know how many freaking times I turned off IS when trying to turn on panning... one of these days, I'm going to tape the bugger.

May I offer a simple solution?

You can simply send me your camara and Lens, and Ill send you my A80.
That way I can take some photos of birds that I can't get close to (I don't mind if the wings will be down) and you can take some nice close up photos of birds that don't mind wondering nice and close :D

lol :) This is funny - but don't let anyone outside the forum see this. We are serious photographers. The ISO thing happens to me all the time. Last time....yesterday :!: (taking pictures of a squirrel and I was wondering why I get such high (1/1200) shutter speed. :P :P

been there, done that, learned my lesson and try keep it away as much as possible.

covered a protest a while back here in Manchester, it was sunny, but i was so surprised to get a shutter speed of 1/4000, all i was thinking was "what a bright sunny day!"

went home, checked the shots, ISO 1600  it was on a 10D, so noise wasn't too bad since it was good light. Ever since then, i always check settings the night before and check again before I start working.

Leo I'll take that Window this time. Sitting behind Ian is not safe because he calls them all cute names and they just slobber all over him. And anyone that's close.

10 more days until GCPS2

I had to get a new passport. I chose "John Bigbooty" for a name. I just hope the border guards don't recognize me this time....

Deal, Scott! You take that window this time. I'd lend you my bright yellow raincoat and hat but I don't think it'll fit you. I'll just wear it myself, just in case one of the elks decides to do a sudden head turn and send slobber flying my way.

Hell, it took me 4 bottles of fabric cleaner and a box of SOS pads to clean the slobber off the Az seats last time. You guys mind sitting on plastic sheets this time round?
