:lol:I am a Canon person and will never change. Unfortunately my brother in law has a bunch of Nikon gear and wants to switch to dslr. I know that this is probably not the best place to ask this question. He wants to stay with Nikon as he has all the gear.

I know Fuji uses Nikon mounts. I went to a pro seminar from shootsmarter.com and ( i forget his name) the pro shoots all Fuji and was a huge fan of the camera.

My brother in law is looking at entry level to starter pro, equivalent to the xti or 40D level on the Canon side. Would you recommend he get a Nikon or Fuji at the somewhat entry level?

Strickly an amatuer photographer with good skill and wants to learn as much as I have about photography. I should of bought the 30d vs the xti when i bought my camera, but i did not know enough about the difference, and I left the decision to the photostore guy . Now i know. I am saving up for a 40d or 5d

I'm not an expert on these (Canon only for me!) however, from what I have picked up over time, I understand that the Fuji's have better dynamic range with the Foveon (?) sensor. I think it has something to do with double pixels one underexposing slightly, one overexposing then it combines them like an HDR image. I may have the exact technicalities slightly wrong, but that is essentially the effect - better shadow and highlight detail.

That comes at a price, of course, the cameras are horribly slow (both frame rate and buffer size), so if he wants to blaze away with the drive on full speed, forget Fujis. They take a few shots, then sit there for ages dumping to card.

The Fujis do have better skin tones as well, so are great for portraits, glamour work and, of course, weddings. In fact the skin tone reproduction, combined with the high DR helping with the problem of black suit / white wedding dress, makes the Fuji one of the best wedding cameras around. Shooting speed not being essential in such use. This tends to be the reason many professionals like them.

The Nikons are much faster to use, so much better suited to action work, have better high ISO noise control and are generally more on a par with Canon.

So, it depends on what he needs from a camera. Much the same as choosing a specific Nikon body to suit his needs. He will need to check out the specs and decide where his needs are best met.

From what little I've used I'd pick the Fuji over the Nikon. The Fuji feel much more natural feeling in the hands. The last wedding I went to, the wedding photographer was using Nikon and the half-sister was using Fuji and I think the Fuji pictures had a much richer color.

Um... the Fuji DSLRs are in Nikon bodies.

yup, the d200 and pro 5 are the same body but fuji stick their own sensor and engine in. My guess is depreciation/getting rid of the fuji will be harsher compared to a well known and well respected Nikon model. if that doesn't matter then hard to call. I just don't see Fuji making an impact on the market with Nikon and Canon (and Sony!) so dominant and Nikon could pull the plug on fuji anytime. a risky buy IMO. Stick with Nikon because they are on an upward cycle right now with their new models.

From what I hear Fujis are painfully slow.
