What is the difference between the two focuses and when/how should each be used?

What are you talking about? I've never heard of "C-AF" and "S-AF". I don't think these are general photography terms. What camera are you using?

I believe you refer to Continuous vs Single Shot Autofocus on some digital compact camera? If so, I would use S only. Because C hunts between foreground and background all the time when you move the camera, even without half-pressing the shutter, makes noise and drains batteries, and still does not focus on anything, when you finally need the shot. That was my experience with G3 anyway.

I believe those are Nikon terms for the equivalent of One Shot (S-AF)and AI Servo(C-AF) on Canon. If you look at the front of a Nikon body, you will see C,S,M to the right of the lens. That's where you select the focusing mode on a Nikon.

I don't know, but it seems to me that Scott is just a little bit too familiar with Nikon terminology, and it makes us Canon types nervous about his intentions. :-)

All my film gear is Nikon. Nothing feels like an F5. If only Nikon knew how to do digital right!
