Hi everyone,
Ever since purchasing my 5D last year I haven't bothered to purchase a flash for land use, as I mostly use the camera for underwater photography and already own special underwater strobes.
I am, however, preparing to attend some special indoor events in the near future and I'd love to have the capability of using my 5D with a flash. These photos will be just for fun and don't really need to be on the professional level.
I'm looking for a basic, sensibly-priced flash that I could use with my 5D that would yield good results. Any recommendations?
Thanks! Robyn

Have a look at the 430EX is you want to use ETTL, or the 580EXII if you want to spend a bit more.

Might as well not cheap out on the flash since you didn't cheap out on the body. I don't think I'd look at anything "lower" than a 580EX or 580EX II (or maybe a Metz 58 AF-1) for the 5D and 1D series bodies.

The 430EX is an awesome flash, but the 580EXII stands up far better to serious use. It has much more features my favourite being the quick recharge flash (forgot the exact term) that works in continuous mode

For casual use, the 430EX is more than capable in my opinion, though it needs a catchlight card or diffuser for bounce flash

The 220EX is a cheap and light option, but is basically a better onboard flash with AF assist beam.
