they seem to thrive in winter, much harder to find in summer, especially the Globulars. I like the first shot best with the enviroment textures.

Lovely series Alistair- esp like #2 (think it's because I haven't spotted this species yet).
Toby - be interesting to know whether the springtail explosion in Winter is due to favourable conditions or lack of predators (or both).

Great to see #1 Alistair, I had no idea they were that small. I really must try and find some one day - havent a clue how well a 1:1 macro would do photographing them though - that is, if I can actually see them lol.

Thanks all for the kind comments :-)
Jay, im pretty sure you will have globulars over in the states. I often find them amongst the grass or in the fallen leaves.
Linda, think you would need a set of extension tubes to get 2:1 they are amazingly small.

Linda if you find a herd of them you could do an environmental shot of them at 1:1.

Thanks Alistair - hmm, extension tubes, something I havent got and know very little about - maybe I should start learning ay  I tended not to read stuff in the past about extn tubes because it wasnt of interest to me at the time, but if they arent too expensive and too difficult to use then I might consider getting some. Are they heavy? Also, whats the downside of using them?

Ahh, thanks Brian, yes, thats a thought, I bet I have herds of them around our place, its ideal for that sort of thing with a small wood just yards away and all sorts of places around our garden where they could be. Just need the weather and the time synchronised to enable me to do it lol.
Also, feel free to add any info with what I said above to Alistair's reply - I just need to know the basics at the moment.
Linda
Oh another PS for both of you actually, not springtail related but I might as well as here - when people can see the Exif data on photos posted in these threads, where can I get a free viewer, and I guess they load onto the toolbar? Something else I didnt think I wanted, but it must be handy to have.
