I see a defensive struggle in the first half followed by big touchdowns in the second half from both sides. Turnovers will play a big part as well... I think the main goal for OSU will be to wear down the LSU defensive line by running Beanie and opening up the passing game... sounds pretty simple, right? :)
Last year Florida was more physical than OSU and I don't think that will happen again.

They're whining about the referees because OSU players committed some serious penalties, including a 15-yard roughing the kicker call that led to an LSU touchdown. In reality all of the calls were good and were straight-up mistakes by the OSU players.

well... the two biggest plays were a) the blocked field goal. This gave LSU the momentum and had a 10 point swing in favor of LSU. and b) the roughing the kicker and personal foul in the third quarter. They basically turned around and gave LSU almost 60 yards. LSU has made the big plays when they needed and didn't get down after the fast start by OSU.

some of the math I see is OSU = Buffalo Bills.
most people don't realize that this is just the life of a sports fan from Ohio. I'm originally from Cleveland and I'm 32. I have had to deal with The Browns (The Drive '87 and the Fumble '88, the team moving to Baltimore). The Indians (many bad teams plus the '95 World Series loss to the Braves and the '97 loss to the Marlins). OSU (many losses in the '90's to Michigan, '06 loss to UF, now '07 loss to LSU, '06 Basketball loss to UF), Cavs (many losses to Jordan/Bulls, '06 loss to San Antonio. Always a brides maid and never the bride... except for the '02 National Championship.

I personally think that in order to make it square across the board, they need to make it all BCS teams play the same number of games. The SEC plays 2 more games than the Big 10 does. Does that cause OSU to lose the game? No, but it's something to think about. Having a month off makes any team a bit off their game. Just my opinion.

I hate that "Split Championship" garbage. That's what happens when you fall into the "Election Paradox."
At the beginning of the season, all BCS elegible colleges are shooting for the BCS championship. It's a flawed system, sure, but it uses QUANTITATIVE data to determine rank. At the end of the season, a location picked before the season began is the site of the championship game. ONE trophy is awarded to the winner of that contest.
"Split Championship" is what you get when people don't like who participated in, or won, the game. When the past BCS champions were listed last night, there were NO asterisks; there were no "also-won" teams; there was no discussion of teams who won polls.
Other teams like to complain that they should have been in the game last night. However, they cannot do anything to petition their way into the game. They knew the rules going in to the season. The rules cannot be changed just because a "Popular Poll" is taken to indicate someone else is "champion". That's the "Election Paradox."
An example (that I do not want to discuss on POTN because it would violate the rules of this forum) would be a close election where lawyers are brought in to change how votes are counted after the election closes. You cannot do this and expect accurate results. "Accurate" was determined before the election just as "Champion" was determined prior to the start of the season.
Sure, it was nice that the AP Poll came out and put LSU at the top. But it doesn't "cement" the championship. That designation took place when the clock reached "0:00".
Polls are elections. Elections are decided by qualitative methods; by gut feelings; by "best opinions"; by heart. College football doesn't elect champions. Champions put points on the scoreboard, not ballots in a hat. Champions don't win hearts. Champions win games.

Agree with you 100%, Bills. I was debating this on ESPN's Gameday Live last night. The BCS National Championship Game officially determines the National Championship according to the rules of the league in which they play.
This is no different than if the AP decided to issue their rankings for NFL teams at the end of the year and declare a "split championship" if the Super Bowl victor isn't #1.
Of course, the media continues to call it a split championship - because USC finished #1 in a media poll. As far as the NCAA is concerned LSU was the National Champion in 2003 and again in 2007. Congrats to LSU.

Still doesn't matter. It's a championship in name only. If it's good enough for the Division 1AA, 2, NJCAA and the NAIA, it ought to be good enough for Division 1A.

Tony-S
8th of January 2008 (Tue), 13:34
Why not? They do it for basketball. Right now, football is (theoretically) about who's the best over the duration of a season, while basketball (and the smaller football divisions) is about who's the best at the end of the season. Should football stay the way it is, or should it be like basketball? Shouldn't all conferences have a championship game (like the SEC and Big 12) or not at all (like the Pac 10 and Big 10)? If the Big 12 and SEC didn't have a championship game, the BCS championship would have been played by two other teams this year. Personally, I think if you're in the top 8 of the BCS standings, you should be in the playoffs. I suspect the SEC would have had two teams and the Big 12 would have had three. And I'm equally sure the other conferences wouldn't have liked that.

Precisely.
Next, the AP will cover the olympics and vote on the best track and field competitors. Someone is going to complain that the gold medal winners are co-gold-medalists with atheletes who didn't even win a silver or bronze medal.
The BCS may be flawed, but the AP Poll is out-dated and self-serving. The press is going to make a story about the press getting together and voting amongst themselves. Excuse me? Isn't that just INVENTING a story? How about reporting on WHAT TOOK PLACE instead of "Yeah, well, but we're going to vote." This sort of garbage will always favor cities with a larger media share and a larger pool of reporters.

I wouldn't think it would be rocket science to figure out some type of playoff bracket/championship series. The smaller division colleges have these playoffs to determine the champion. Also, college baseball and basketball each has a playoff to determine the national champion. So, I would think that with some thought and reasoning, this too could be perform for division one football.
And yes, congratulations to LSU for winning the national championship!!!
