This little guy was the high-light from yesterday's outing. This is the closest I have seen a Merlin. After flying around for a bit it settled on a branch in the open. It was showing off with its fanned tail feathers. Nice. Actually, it likely was biding its time till its next meal of Mourning Dove.
Photographed with a Canon 40D and 100-400L IS lens. Cloned out a number of branches. These are greatly down-sized.

Thanks. Well it would because we all shot the same bird ;) I was fortunate to have it in various poses but post-processed some of those just now.

Nice shot. I guess you can view those white skies as either a problem, or as Rubberhead said, a studio backdrop! ;)

Forgive the noob question, but how do you get at the level of the bird while it's perched?

I like how you added the new sky to it in your image. I may do that as well.

Two very nice images with number 2 being my favourite. Wish I had been there.

Thanks Rubberhaed.

Thanks pknight. I see Ted has added a blue sky background. I may do the same. I have another image of the same Merlin which looks great with the white background. It has to do with the pose. Psssst.....I'd love to get a Merlin into a studio and get all the shots and be done with it  Nah, nothing like photographing it in the wild.
Stunning shots. You did great on these.
Thanks Sindri.
