I just bought a flash template online. I am using Adobe CS3 to edit it. But I am very new to flash. I do not know how to edit the text. I right click on the layer and go to edit. All it does is highlight it. Also it is set as a clip. I am just trying to change the Title on my site. Right now it says Johns Photos. I can't for my life change it.

Make sure you are editing the .fla file, not the .swf file. You should be able to highlight the text and edit it. If it is inside a movie clip or a button you might have to double click on it until you get to the point where you can edit the text.

Or send it to jeff or myself.

Yeah I PMed CC and then never received the file so I hope they figured it out.

I cant imagine not being able to edit text... Weird.

I dont find flash that confusing at all. There are many good books out there for Flash CS3. I'd recommend picking one up.

Yeah I'm not sure why they couldn't edit text - it should be pretty simple so long as your in the fla file and I think even if the text was buried in a movie clip they could figure it out. Maybe something else is going on... hopefully they got it.

I find it a bit confusing. I'm using flash 8, but its probably similar. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out how to do things like drop down menus in flash. I can pretty much do them with the timeline, but I run into a few bugs and I would prefer to use actionscript for the whole thing. Are there any books you would recommend for actionscript or just flash in general specifically pertaining to websites (and hopefully flash 8)? I've had trouble finding good books.

I'm also not quite sure how people do all the "flashy" animations. This (http://www.flashmint.com/show-template-2021.html) is a simple example, but even here I wonder how this is coded so that when you click on one of those thumbnail photographs it comes up and enlarges and then if you close it it goes away.

P.S. I checked out your site and I'm pretty impressed with your flash abilities :D

As far as actionscript goes, I have not had to deal with that a whole lot. My flash skills are basic, but I can make a fairly nice website with it. Drop downs are not something I have ever done, either.

The two books I have are:

http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Windows-Macintosh-Visual-QuickStart/dp/0321502914/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199832214&sr=1-6

http://www.amazon.com/Flash-Professional-Advanced-Windows-Macintosh/dp/0321503031/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199832214&sr=1-10

Here's a list for actionscripting books.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/002-5526298-7096842?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=flash+actionscript&x=0&y=0

I'd be more than happy to sell both the copies I have if you want them. I do not need them anymore. I'd sell them for $20 a piece plus $5 for shipping.

In a similar situation. I have created some small flash files in the past, and I am somewhat competent working in Flash. Recently purchased Flash CS3 in efforts to take my photography website up a notch as far as flashy "flair" or whatever you want to call it. So I started doing some of the training courses from Lynda.com on Flash CS3 and Action Scripts 3.0. After a few days of training, I realized that I am further away from being able to write my own files than I had thought. So I looked for a great template that I could just customize. I was impressed with some of the templates from http://www.photobiz.com, as far as them having a built in calendar, gallery, etc. Looked good, until I realilzed that they HAD to host the files and charged a monthly fee to host it. I already have a great hosting account through GoDaddy with 100GB of Disk Space and 1 TB of bandwidth. I am not worried about having someone host the site.

So I found a couple of sharp "cookie cutter" templates from http://flashmint.com and http://icetemplates.com that I thought would look good with the theme that I am going for. I felt that I would be okay to grab one and edit it to what I need. Now after spending the money, I have found that they leave no comments in the code, they disquise a lot of the functionality of the site, and made it REALLY difficult to do some of the thing that they claim are easy to do on their front page.

All flash website templates presented in our collection can be easily customized, any flash element is editable and can be modified to suit your needs (you can change images, texts, add more pages). Browse through our flash templates, flash layouts, flash sites designs to choose the right one for you!

I was able to go in and change the logos and edit the text fields, however, trying to add a page or re-order the links, or point a link to another page... forget about it. It is insanely difficult. At least it is for me in CS3. I tried Support, and they just want me to spend the money to have them customize the page for me. I am not paying $1000 for a $55 template. I just spent more than that on the CS3 Design Suite.

I guess what I am curious about is would there be any reason that CS3 doesn't show the same scripting codes or anything as what FlashMX or Flash8 would show? I would be willing to send the files to someone if they could see what it looks like in an older version of Flash. That or if anyone would be interested in pointing me in the right direction on fixing some of the links and scripts, please let me know.

I appreciate any and all efforts.... Because right now, I am starting to think my phpnuke site is looking a hell of a lot more like what I should use.

This is a few months on obviously, but I was able to change /add links/ edit the template to remove the annoying swoosh on metadata. I'm in the middle of working out adding a button their way, but I may just add a new custom button instead.
There is a load of code hidden in obscure variables, but you can figure it out.
$25 for a button? I'll keep going on it myself and learn from it.
