Which would you buy, the canon 17-85 or the 24-70 f2.8L?. Would the 24-70 be better for low light situations owing to its larger apperture?. And does the fact that the 24-70 is an "L" lenseautomatically make it a better choice. My other lenses are 18-55Kit lense and 70-200 f4L
Thanks :)

I don't know about the 17-85 but I just purchased the 24-70 and have had the first shots processed (still using film) and they are amazingly sharp. I recommend the lense to anyone it's awesome.

You have the "Kit" lens,. and the 70-200 f/4L.
Compare those two in build and image quality.
Now you have a roiugh Idea of the difference between the 17-85 EF-S and the 24-70mm /2.8L

Well, if money is no object, then the L lens if the obvious choice. The build quality, wide aperture and sharper optics beat the kit lens hands down. Factor is money, and you have to decide if these improvements are worth it to you and will make a significant difference in the type of photography you do or will do in the future. It's all about tradeoffs.
