I was curious if we can get a sub-forum for emergency services. It seems there are lots of photographs and threads on firefighting, EMS, accidents, rescues, etc. It would be neat to group all of these under one sub-forum. Just my $.02.

I'd go for a sub forum too.
Most of my stuff is emeregency services related and i have to say i get a lot of inspiration from a lot of the stuff posted by others.

I do not know of any other forum on the internet that has either a devoted forum or sub-forum for emergency services with a definitive focus on the pure photography aspect. I think this idea is great.

Who is/are the decision maker(s)? I will e-mail or PM direct if I am given the direction to proceed.

Posting into Forum Talk will generally get you noticed by a mod, which incidentally is the best place for this kind of thread.

Cretaing new forums/subforums is strictly driven by amount of traffic a subject generates.

To me emergency services sounds like it is a niche genre which does not generate as much traffic as for example macro's or birds etc.

Creating a niche sub forum would only deprive the other (larger) sections from seeing that work. Obviously, you'd want as many people as possible to view your shots, so place them in "Urban" or "Transportation" (whichever is applicable).

Creating an EMS section would pretty much guarantee that only EMS workers would visit there.

I generally look at the new posts and if I see someone having trouble, I read it. The mods are great here. Jon just answered my question in small P&S forum. Not a problem. And you can always PM someone you think can help you.

Ummm.. I think the OP is talking about Police Cars/Ambulances, etc.

Maybe you're thinking about urgent photographic queries?

LOL, Suzie. Did you even read the thread?!

I thought I did. Emergencies. Wow, I did not know we had On Star. :) That's great.

Okay, I read the thread. I have seen a lot of those kinds of posts lately. I don't know how popular that would be.

I think it would be really popular. First, I think its a logical place to gather all sorts of photos for emergency services. Second, I think that many folks will visit the sub-forum in similar fashion to the fender bender tourists that slow down at every emergency scene to take a peek.

There is no place on the web that is specific to these types of photographs from the standpoint of the photographic eye.

btw... sorry for posting this in the wrong forum.

In any event, seems like more and more firefighters and emergency services photographers are posting action shots over in the Urban forum. I think it would be neat to have it all under one umbrella. At least to try the idea for 60 days to see how it goes.

I hadn't considered this before so I went and checked "urban" to see how many I could find. I checked all the threads on the first page and found 3 threads that could be considered "emergency services"... the oldest thread on the first page was updated 15 hours ago (as of the time of this posting)

Historically we have split image sharing topics out based on number of threads. We haven't done it solely on the request of a special interest group. I can't see how there's enough "emergency services" posts there to justify a sub-forum.

I did see lots of posts when searching under the term "fire".

Just keep in mind that a sub-forum, should it exist one day, would be the first of its kind on the web (at least that I could find) for images of emergency services from a photographic art and photojournalistic standpoint.

Urban Life
City life, happenings, industrial, photojournalism, street photography...

I think that pretty much covers it. Just not enough images of red/blue flashing lights to warrant it's own place at this time..

oooooo k. Just a thought. Its all good.

We don't want almost empty forums which will be the result if we create forums that way instead of based on actual traffic.

Thats an unfair statement. Don't get me wrong, I understand that there isn't enough traffic on POTN for emergency services photography to have it's own sub-forum but it is a money making industry, and to say as a general statement that it doesn't generate as much traffic as whatever is a false statement. If you wanted to take the time I could name a quite a few national publications and forums for you. I'm actually a moderator for one of those boards.

I think the more appropriate way to say this is, "To me emergency services sounds like it is a nich genre which does not generate as much traffic on POTN as for example macro's or birds etc."

Sorry if you misunderstood but naturally I meant traffic on POTN. I have not idea how hot that subject is outside POTN.

Ooh.... Photos of blood and gore and people's guts hanging out... Just what I want to see while I'm having my tea.

Honestly - I have seen loads of photos of dead bodies etc - one of my friends was a soldier in Northern Ireland and took photos of all the IRA terrorists that the army shot. They're really not very interesting!

I hope you are kidding. That is not the type of photos we are talking about. Look in Urban Life and you'll see what we are talking about.

It could work but I think the respected forums work for them selfs. (auto accidents in transportation, building and street incidence in urban, ect...) I know the topic would be used for the artistic aspect of accidents but to many it would seem like a place devoted to death and gore. Would people go there to give some CC or to stare and comment over other peoples misfortune? Its a little to contraversal a subject for it to be a step forward for this community. The artistes here that need it should just use their judgment and post in the forum topic it belongs.

To political and not enough of a GOOD reason to implement it.

Yes the guy I know was keen on showing me his photos of corpses etc. He loved his life in the army.

I agree. Accidents should be posted in Urban Life as well as fire scenes. Apparatus should be posted in Transportation. Firefighters as the subject should be posted in People. Waterball and Combat Challenge shots should be posted in Sports.
