Just took the strap off my camera because its always getting in the way. Wondered how many of you use a strap or prefer it without.

NO.
Dropped my camera twice last month with the 24-70 on concrete so now i'm getting a handstrap

Dang! I have a handstrap and the POTN neck strap on my 5D and getting a handstrap for my new 40D to go with the nice new red POTN neckstrap. Yes, the straps can get in the way, but dropping a $3500 set-up is worse.

I see people with whimpy straps all the time and that kills me. Invest $22 on a good strap, that has the great quick release and you're set. I use 2 cameras most of the time, so both are on. If I didn't, I'd drop both of them.

I don't like the hand strap at all and it gets in the way. I'd rather have straps slung over my body and shoulder instead.

Does that strap screw right under the body?

Where do you hang your camera when you need both your hands free for a few seconds/minutes?
Easy, you squat a little and stick it between your legs. :)

Now that's something I hadn't thought about. Think I'll have a looksy.
SuzyView

Yes, it screws into the tripod thing under the camera body (does not need the grip), and then it has another part where the tripod can be put on. So, it's win-win.

The POTN strap has a very sturdy quick release. I have never seen it fail. Sometimes with 2 cameras on me, I have no choice but to remove one with the quick release. It's been so much easier. I don't have stock in POTN, but I think that the strap is one of the best accessories you can get for an expensive and heavy camera.

6th of January 2008 (Sun), 21:38
Oh, forgot. Because I have 2 cameras all the time, I ordered the extended (longer) attachments to the camera. I carry the 40D across the chest and needed about 3 inches more and the POTN store has those as well.

I put the strap on my camera right when I got it, but I end up not using it... (except when outside, lol)
It has caused more harm then good, it is what made me pull my camera off my desk and break my 50mm 2 days after I got it
But I still have it on there...

No straps.
I finally took them off because I was constantly fighting with them while shooting.
It's more comfortable to just pull the camera out of my holster and shoot and then return it. Hanging a camera around my neck all day is a drag. Always worried about banging it on something or laying it down to eat unprotected.
If I bring two cameras the other is in my backpack.

It is a real nuisance on a tripod, but for genral handling, I wrap it around my fingers and it's fail-safe.
Actually considering converting it so it can be quickly "snapped" off for tripod usage.

The POTN strap is excellent for comfort and convenience. I quite often use it without the foam section so it works as a loop holder. I can't see that I'd ever take it off.
I use the Canon strap as a shoulder strap for my tripod.

Yes. I use a strap and a handstrap when I have the grip on and just the neckstrap when I don't.
Almost never goes around my neck, though. Gets wrapped around my wrist twice.

I always use the camera strap ... I'm guessing it's no fun to drop a 5D with the 'brick' , onto a concrete surface. It's also easier to let it hang from my neck than to just carry this thing around.
When I've got both the 5D (w/ 24-70L) and 10D (w/100-400 L) with me, the 10D goes over my shoulder and I clip the strap to the 5D strap so it doesn't slide off my shoulder.

I have the stock Canon strap on the camera but do not hang it around my neck unless I can't set it down and need my hands free.
More often than nought it is in the way if I have it around my neck and I feel that even single-handed holding is secure.
If I had a large telephoto on without a tripod or monopod for a long time, like at an airshow, then I'd use it around my neck mainly to give my arms a rest every so often.
Also if I were an event photographer, especially with more than one body, I'd use the straps.

After replying "No", I had second thoughts. Can't change my vote, but...
I bought a nice padded strap at Kits/Ritz. I like it better than most others including my POTN strap (sorry), because the connector straps that attaches to the camera body can be shortened to almost nothing. This keeps them out of my way when the main part of the strap isn't connected.
So...I'm back to a "Yes" vote. :D

I never used a strap for the longest time, then I watched a guy get run over by a couple of kids screwing around at the zoo, his camera hit the ground hard from that point on I always have a strap on my camera. I tend to wrap it around my forearm as around my neck gives me a head ache.

I use a Domke Gripper (Canon Professional) neck strap. Not around my neck.
I snake the strap around my right arm and I can shoot portrait or landscape.
I've used this strap and in this fashion for so many years that it is just second nature. The strap is nerver in my way.
When I'm finished shooting I hang it around my neck and move on. Beer gives me a headache, camera straps never have.

I have always used the neckstrap, sometimes wrapped around my arm. After lugging around a 5D and 20D together one day I invested in POTN straps and have not regretted it a bit. They are much more sturdy and comfortable than the stack straps and are probably one of the best photography investments I have made in terms of value for my money.

All the new straps seem way to short for me. The straps I used in the 70,s and 80's were much longer.
I like to wear the strap on my left shoulder and the camera down by my right hand. That way I can comfortably keep my hand on the camera for a quick shot, unlikely to slide off my shoulder when walking my 3 dogs. And then there is the safety factor of walking around taking pictures in cities like NY in the 70's and 80's. Like women are told to carry thier puses to avoid a snatch and grab. Picture this, today actually GPS in one hand camera hanging off the the right shoulder. I must have looked like a criminal's dreams walking the water front in NY.
So who makes the longest Camera strap that will work on my XTi? The Canon one woold be great if I could just figure out how to hold and shot with my elbow. LOL!

I have neck straps on all my cameras but the only time they are around my neck is when shooting over a railing either from a height or on a boat. I like the little extra security and peace of mind.
Otherwise I use them on my shoulders often with the camera reversed and the lens behind my back.

I use the neck strap, but never round my neck,
its either wrapped round my forearm or round my elbow,
doesn't get dropped, can use in either orientation and it doesn't have a horrible bolt on the bottom making portrait uncomfortable like I'm imagining the wrist strap would.

We could probably have told you that Chris!
Realistically one of the quick release types would be a reasonable compromise. Either the Optech / POTN or the UpStrap would be fine. You end up with a few inches of strap still connected but not really enough to get in the way. And it only takes a moment to connect the complete strap back on.
cheers

neckstrap always on camera. neck strap is usually a wristtrap when shooting continuosly. don't trust plastic quick releases, which is about all sold these days, so when windy and camera is on tripod, the strap is rubber band wrapped to keep it from flapping in wind.

I tried it out and had just about despaired of actually using it, when I came across this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=247029. I'm now using the hand strap on the right, and the Pro Loop neck strap attached (on both sides) to the left lug. So it's secure, while not getting in my way. Most of the time. At any rate, I'm liking it. This is for actual shooting by the way, I don't really do much walking around with a camera around my neck.

You could also fix something yourself to attach to the tripod mount if you're not using a tripod...

A company makes an attachment that screws into the tripod hole on your camera that will allow you to use the E-1 handstrap. I've seen a few threads about it, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the device. You could probably do a forum search and come up with an answer though.

My friend thought it would be funny to wave his hand in front of my lense as I was composing a shot, misjudged, hit the end of the lense knocking it out of my hand.I dropped my camera - luckily the strap was around my neck. Two things came to mind - 'the strap' and 'must get insurance'.
