Nice shot of a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.
I was thinking the same thing at first, but the Sapsucker should have a white patch on the wing coverts. This bird does not have such a patch. Also, there is prominent red on the head of both male and female Sapsuckers.

I was wondering about that myself, but after checking the books and the internet, a three-toed woodpecker was the closest match.

This bird is actually a perfect match for the juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. The American Three-toed Woodpecker will be black, as opposed to this bird, which is brown. It also has solid black wings, for the most part, and a clean white throat, among other things.

I didn't run across any juvenile yellow-bellied sapsuckers pics. Maybe that is why it wasn't really frightened of me. Thanks for helping me out Ephily.

most interesting - as I had one of the very same critters in my trees today and thought it was a female sapsucker. Glad to know it's a juvie.

Nice4 shot. Those are for sure sapsucker marks on the tree though, whatever the bird is. :)

It is nice seeing other s3 owners on here. My s3 is still a big improvement over my A70. When it comes to the better stuff, I can still dream. I really like your refraction pics on flickr.
