Lightroom importing: can't use "shift" select?

In lightroom, I am trying to import a portion of my CF card via card reader. When I am in the import box (previews visible) I can't click on a picture then hold the shift button (PC) and select another picture thereby having all the pictures in the "set" checked. I must check each box one at a time.

I must be doing something wrong.:confused:

I tried that; CTR and click will select multiple pictures, but I must click each one.

I thought I could click the first picture, hold down shift, then click the last one resulting in all the pictures inbetween being selected (checkbox)

also: my version is 1.3.1
