Can someone please tell me how to get sharp focus on the whole subject,the digital rebel seems to only focus sharply on one part of the subject.

That is due to the depth of field (http://www.ephotozine.com/techniques/viewtechnique.cfm?recid=63) a component of your lens, not your camera.
