I played a little and I am impressed. I have had a few other digicams that had BW mode but they just looked like grayscale images to me. They always looked flat and really needed tweaking. I took a few with the 20D and set it to the red filter and the contrast was excellent. The only thing was that there did seem to be more noise at ISO 400 than I have seen in color. Any ideas?...Dean

any new comments on the 20d? I respect your opinion more than online reviews...and local camera stores know dick **** about anything. Have you tested ou the b&w function yet?

did you check out http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/ ?

ya dood, the camera has soo much more contrast and color saturation!! Black and White function works really good. You can select filters in b&w mode and use like...red, orange, or green filters just like if you were shooting with film, except for screwing on different filters! Also select sepia tone, blue tone or green tone while in b&w mode. The burst mode is QUICK, you rip off three shots when just trying to take one. I have been having some problema...my 50mm 1.4 will cause the camera to freeze up sometimes, gotta remove the battery and re-insert.

Wow, I think that's atleast the 4th mention I've seen of a problem with the 20D freezing/locking up!

I'm the same way.
If I had to guess, I would say canon pused the CF card performance of the 20D just a *little* too far. I mean, it has faster CF card performance than any camera out there, even the MKII, and not by a little, but by a fair margin.
I think what may be happening may be equivalent to overclocking your computer. Increased speed, but sometimes instability/lockups, especially when the camera/computer gets hot.

For those who have had this happen, was it in a warm/hot environment?

btw sorry for the off topic talk....

some think its simply firmware...some thing the boot up time isnt allowing for the camera to read the lens info fast enough, some think its the battery, some think...it goes on and on and on....

i think kawter heard back from canon about the issue, i think they want him to send the camera in...if so NOT COOL

its apparent the issue is out there, how bad I dont know, it seems the lockups are random and far apart....and people are overdramatizing the situation

a formal statement from canon would be nice, seems like a big slip up fromt he numbers of people who are having problems...

do nikon cameras have problems? humm...

i dont want to open up the box, shoot 200 photos and have to repack it and mail it back to canon...that will PISS me off just a "little"

however results from high iso and other examples are more than impressive, no doubt i want the cameras abilities BADLY...even the people i know who are having issues are not compalining because the camera is so nice.

id almost like to know who DOESNT have the lockup issue with the 20d?!?!

I have not had any problems yet, an it would be real bad if I was shooting a wedding and the camera froze. Oh well, so far so good, lets hope it stays that way...Dean

Received my camera last Friday and took about 150 Soccer game shots. Never had a problem but 150 shots is really not enough to be the telling story. Knock on wood, so far so good. I'd love to know how many went out the door with the first shipment. At least that would give the issue some dimension. Time will tell but if this release goes like the other recent Canon digital body releases there will be a firmare release sooner rather than later.

Getting back on topic--

I've played with the B&W mode on my 20D and have enjoyed it. One very nice 'feature' to have in conjunction with the B&W mode(s) is the ability to record in JPEG ~AND~ RAW. In this way, you can experiment with all of the camera settings without having to sacrifice the image, because you'll have the RAW file as a backup that does ~NOT~ record as a B&W. Very cool.

I have one so-so B&W image in my 20D gallery below (don't judge the camera by the photographer  )
