I do because I am too lazy to try anything else. :(

It is a very unstable program, especially when you get more than 500 MB of photos stored in it.

I have a G4 DP Mac with a lot of RAM, and still iPhoto gets slow at times.

I don't really like iPhoto ...

Yeah i used it for a while and it drove me crazy. My job is Mac admin etc etc and decided to give it a try. I think after using it for about a month that it isnt really capable of handling large amounts of images or large file sizes. It also tends to file things on your hard disk where it wants to and not where you want to. In fairness its been a while since i used it and it probably has advanced in many ways but i still wouldnt use it. To me there are no advantages of using it....! I prefer just to download with a crad reader and decide myself where they are filed etc..!

I have been using iPhoto for the past 3 years and I'm still in love with it. Currently I have 4,443MB of pictures on my Powerbook G4 and it's fast ... did I mention FAST!! With my new 20D I am now shooting in raw -- iPhoto is jpg driven so I need to convert my raw files first before I import them into iPhoto.

In my thoughts iPhoto is elegant, well organized, user-friendly, well designed software program!

I've been using iphoto for years. The early versions of it were not very good, but the current version is rock solid. I have close to 5000 photos, it's fairly quick and never crashes.

I've used it. Found it quite limiting and much prefer iView Media Pro for cataloging and the File Browser in Photo Shop CS for viewing. It does have some feature I use from time to time, but you get what you pay for and iPhoto is free.

Yep. It was lousy in the early stages but the current version is really nice.

I've been using iPhoto since I got my dRebel last September. It has gotten steadily better.

I use it to organize stuff. I put Category::<category> where <category> is things like Landscape, Travel or People. Then I've created Smart Albums that will get all photos that have Category::Landscape in the comments field for example, so I can view all of my landscape photos easily.

Then I've begun to rate my photos. I use 1 star for my worst stuff and five stars for my best work. Everything gets at least one star so I know if I've rated it or not. Once I've done this I can create a Smart Album that will get me all photos for example with Category::Landscape in the comments and with a rating of greater than 2 stars. So, I can get at things that I think are good within a category very easily.

I used to shoot in JPG, but have since mostly converted to shooting in RAW. I tried out C1Pro and I'm going to get it. In C1 I process the RAW's into aprox 3MP JPG's and those go into iPhoto. Then when I find one I want to print I go back and develop it from the RAW for printing.

I also have Smart Albums to find all of my uncategorized photos and unrated ones so I can categorize and rate them as I get time. So, eventually all of my stuff will be searchable by subject and rating in any combination I like. So, I'd be able to find any landscape, with a person in it with a rating over 3 stars for example.

I do wish it was faster, but I'm coping and eventually I'll have a G5 with 8BG of RAM. :D

I used to use it a lot when I was shooting JPG images with a Sony digital. Since I moved to the Canon 10D, I've not used it at all.

It was a very good app for organising images and I often used it to export pictures to Quicktime movies.

If Apple could improve the speed and let the app recognise Canon RAW files, I might consider using it again as an image catalogue.

This is how I use iPhoto currently when I shoot RAW files. How long has it been since you used iPhoto? The new version is much faster.

When shooting in RAW I make a smaller JPG that I put into iPhoto. I do my categories there. If I decide I'm going to do a print I go back to the RAW file and process it for printing.

Mark,

I've not used iPhoto since April when I bought the 10D. I was using the latest version of iPhoto but found that it repeatedly locks up on my G4 1Gig Powerbook just rotating an image.

Annoying thing is, iPhoto opens up whenever I connect the 10D to the computer even though all the photos are RAW.

Well, I can't speak to the rotation issue in iPhoto. I have a DP 1GHz PM, and it works fine for me. But in general using C1 to make the iPhoto images I don't have to rotate. Enough of that though.

Let's solve the iPhoto opening issue. Go to your Applications folder and open Image Capture. Then Image Capture -> Preferences -> Camera. Then select "No Application" for the "When a camera..." option.

Mark,

Thanks for the tip, I'd been trying to resolve that for ages.

You're welcome it's the first time I've been able to render a piece of advice on this board befor someone else piped up with the answer.
