:?:
I know this doesn't pertain to digital photography, but I'm hoping my query will be answered.
I'm just getting into photography and have been asked to get a fully manual 35 mm SLR camera with appropriate lenses, a portable flash unit, and appropriate extension cords or slave synchronisation
I'd like to go in for a Canon. But have been very confused by ppl on this matter. For instance the guy at the store told me that no Canon camera was fully manual and if I wanted something like that I'd only have to go in for a Nikon (not something I want to do)
Then he tried to plam off a Rebel 2000 on me, isn't that a bit outdated?
What model should I go in for? And is there any other make out there as good as Canon? Please HELP!

You might want to explain more about your purpose.
These days, about the only time that somebody asks for a manual SLR film camera is when it is the instructor of a photo composition class. Are we talking about film cameras or digital cameras here?
Many Canon cameras have a manual exposure mode, and you can use it pretty much independently of all of the automatic modes.

Yes, that's exactly right. I am signing up to do a 2 yr diploma in photography. And it just says that all students need to have their own fully manual 35 mm SLR cameras with them. And it's a film camera. Not digital.
Do you think that a Canon EOS Elan 7e is good? Or what...?
I've asked some ppl around here. But they haven't been very helpful. I just don't want to invest in something that's already a bit old which I think the rebel 2000 is.
I just want something that I can use for the nest 3 years atleast. What camera would you advice me to go in for?

The Elan is a great camera.. but unfortunately.. the slaesman is "sort of" right this time around.
You can set the Elan to fully manual... but it is inherently a fully automatic camera.
So.. I guess the specific wording of the Instructor may be important.
Is he really requiring that your Camera have no automation? or is he/she requiring a Camera that CAN be set to fully manual. ???
You may want to look into it before buying... I'd assume the Elan is fine though... but it would be a good idea to be sure. :)

Oh.. and NO Don't get a Rebel.. they are nice little cameras.. but they DO LACK many of the features that the Elan has.. and may not give you the manual functions the class requires.

Also,
I feel that if this is for a class, why would you invest in the latest and greatest film camera? Unless you expect to stick with film for a while. If you need a manual camera (or one that can be set to manual), you may want to look at a used on on eBay.

browneyedgirl, you might want to ask blinking8s, as he is currently taking classes too.
btw, and a side note, Van Morrison's "brown eyed girl" is one of my all time fav. songs.
