Hi All,
Just come back from Wales Rally GB and oon the Sunday a problem popped up with my Canon Eos 10D, the same lens was on all the time, the Canon 28-135mm IS USM. i was taking photos fine all day then all of a sudden all the rest of my images had a band of light appearing in the same place all the time on the top of the photo and i was getting Double images of the car,
After inspecting my setting and resetting them this problem still occurs,
-The Sensor at the back of the camera has a Shutter and is getting stuck sometims at the bottom, Could this be the problem?
-Where the lenses are attached at the top there are two material stoppers for the mirror these have fallen off, Could this be the Problem?
Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated Please.
When i get in tonight i will post some photos so you
can see what is happening.
Regards,
Jonathan....

If the shutter's getting stuck open, that would do it. If the mirror cushions fell off, and light's being reflected onto the sensor, that would also do it. Or (worst case) the mirror cushions could be interfering with the shutter and light could be reflecting off the sensor. Only way to tell is to look at it, although if the problem's with reflection, I'd expect it to vary with the lens in use; if it's the shutter, it'd likely be shutter speed dependent.

Rather than asking an online forum, wouldn't you be better off taking the camera to an Authorized Canon Repair shop? We can only guess at the problem. They can give you an definitive answer, plus an estimate on the repair costs.

Well yes but then no - tis amazing how many people on this forum can come up with definitive answers. Such are then points of reference for us all if we experience similar problems

So, when you get the camera repaired (which you will have to do, you know), are you going to come back here and post what the problem was and how much it cost to fix?

Shutter's sticking that last little bit. This may also account for the double images, if one of the second-curtain blades is running slow, giving a second burst of exposure to the sensor due to an extra gap. As the bottom of the picture appears to be relatively free from double imaging, it may be a progressive thing. You're going to have to send it in.

Hi there Jon!
Looking through various posts on the net, i only found yours with a similar problem (the lighter stripe on the top of the photo) - how did you get it fixed?
You see, one guy here in my city is selling a 10D in perfect shape, just with that problem (tho it's less than in your case) - i'm wondering how much did it cost to get it fixed. I'd glaldy buy this 10d, cuz it's quite cheap, but first i wanna learn what is the cause of that problem and if it's difficult or expensive to fix it.
Please do let me know

I recently had my 10D repaired by Canon NJ. I sent the amount they said to send and then when they went to do the work they actually looked at it and saw the frame count was high and hit me up for more bucks for a new shutter too.
SOunds like you have found the failure limit.

But Pete, have you had the same problem as the original poster here? That lighter stripe/reflections on the top of the photo?
The only failure that i experienced so far, was with my 300D. After some 35k shots the secondary mirror was getting stuck and, thus, there was no AF. But i had it fixed and cleaned for something like a $100. But that's Poland.
All i wanna know is what is the cause and what is the fix cost for that PARTICULAR problem that the original poster mentioned. Anyone? :) Please.

Shutter repairs run around $180-$200.

But is this in fact a shutter failure? I can't quite grasp how it works... double opening of the shutter during exposure? Or one of the shutter curtains now closing properly? Do let me know, pls.

Do let me know, pls.Either one would be treated as a shutter failure and Canon would replace the shutter. You wouldn't want to pay for the labour costs if they were to try to rebuild your existing shutter. It's far cheaper and faster for them to just pop in a new one which was built and calibrated at the factory to the same specs as the original than to replace some parts and then set about trying to make sure everything fits smoothly together and then bring it back to spec by hand.
