having used an old slr camera for the last 30 years, i always used a uv filter in high altitudes, do i have to change settings on my a60 to compensate for this?

No. A UV filter has essentially 0 filter factor. Or were you asking about changing settings on the A60 to compensate for the extra UV? There's not much other than a filter that can do this.

You can modify your picture after the fact to remove haze, but that only goes so far, and is a lot more bother than removing haze with a filter...
If you're shooting lots of images where a UV filter is needed - use one if possible and save on the editing time later.
