Both me and my friend are having problems with both our cameras. 1Ds and 1D Mark2, both with our own 70-200 2.8 L IS USM.

In the middle of shooting, the lens aperture would go to "00" and the lens would be locked unusable, as if it's not mounted properly. (but it is!) We then have to remove the lens and remount it.

Another problem is, also in the middle of shooting, the mirror jams and display reads "Err 01".

The same problem to two different cameras and two different 70-200 2.8 IS lenses. Everything was bought brand new. Everything is less than 6 months old. I don't think even at the amount that we shoot, 6 months is still relatively "young" for 1 series cameras.

That is a well known problem with the 70-200 IS with many victims. For many people it has involved sending the lens back to Canon for a new IS Unit. If cleaning the lens contacts and reseating the lens doesn't work, it needs a trip to Canon.

i've only had a similar problem once, with my 70-200 IS + 1D, it showed me err 02 then locked up the camera.

I took the battery out, put it back in, re-start camera, everything worked fine ever since.

Seems only Canon can help you out with the problem

I've got the MKII and the 70-200/2.8 L IS and I have never experienced this. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

well.. to be honest both of us suspect is due to us removing and changing lenses without shuttingn off the camera... (thus the gyro might still be active)

do you guys shut off your cameras when changing lenses??

Most of the lock ups reported occurred when the lens was changed with the camera off. That is the best way to do it. The sensor is charged when the camera is on and more likely to pick up dust. It also advises to turn off the camera first in the manual.

I don't have a 70-200 L IS, but two other IS lenses (the 28-135 IS USM and 70-300 DO IS USM).

The manual says that you should not remove the lens when the camera is on and especially not when IS is engaged. I don't have the manual here but if I remember correctly, it even says you can damage the lens if you remove it while IS is on.

So switch off the camera and wait a few seconds for the IS to completely shut down before switching lenses.

I use the lense on the 1D and 1Ds, never had a problem....so far.
