This hoverfly seems to be going in for some thumb worship :)
Excuse the state of my DIY/Gardening thumb.

nice shot as usual!
i took 10-15 shots of two hover flys yesterday, and i actually got one in focus! i was very pleased...however, i had my iso at 800....and it didnt need to be i guess,,....the photo was grainy.
i should have used my home made diffuser, and the flash with the super macro mode, but then i would have had trouble getting the shot in the limbs of the lime tree.
so, (learning about exposure control for the first time) if i choose ISO 400 or 200, can i just adjust the exposure acordingly, and get less grain? i know i need to trial and error it, but just curious what you think...

Thanks for the comments JK1, Joan and Mark - this was the enivitable result of me holding the leaf the bug was on :)
Mark - keep on forgetting hand cream stuff.
JK1 grainy images are caused by both highish ISO being used and the exposure level- underexposed images or bits of image will tend to have more noise and it is one of the problems with small sensors that they are much noisier at high ISO. You would be bettter off if you could use your flash system.

i agree about using the flash. it has been suggested from the start. i made a diffuser from a styrofoam plate, (thanks to a reminder of how to make one from fellow member coralnutz) and it works wonders to keep from getting a shadow on the photo from the lens sticking out. i just need to get a bowl next time. it would be less bulky, and would work good. i was at my parents house, and i didnt have access to the diffuser that i made. so ill make another with the bowl, and give it another try!
thanks for the input!

now that i think of it, most that i see are covering the actual flash itself, but im not sure if i made one like that, that it would keep me from getting that dreadful shadow...
ill have to try to make my own design, one that is less bulky, with the same results.
if i make one that works , ill be sure to share it with you!

Excellent shot of the thumb. If I had to make a suggestion, I'd say try to work on get this fleshy appendage in focus a bit better and perhaps more centered. Pity that a pesky fly ended up being in the shot, otherwise it is perfect! What are the chances of that? Maybe you can just crop the fly out. Great picture!

Don't think I'm that proud of the state of my thumb :)

Is this the full image or just the thumbnail view? Get it... thumbnail? Ok, I don't have anymore jokes.
If a thumb that large dropped down in front of me, I'd be bowing down in submission too!

Looks like it's just about to do one of those ram attacks. Fine control of your subject Brian ;)

Hey Brian,
Sorry about making fun of you there. I meant it all in humor and not anything against you. I am afraid my care of my fingers is not any better. as long as my fingers work well enough to push the shutter button (and a couple others) I am happy.
I do like the shot it is awesome! and to have the thumb to give perspective to size. is just excellent! Thanks for sharing all your hard work.
