This isnt just a mallard with a bad feather day is it? Is it a distinct sub-species?

I was told that this happens to ducks occasionally when I posted a pic of a duck with the same sort of hairdoo . If I remember correctly its some kind of growth or tumor maybe someone with better knowledge than I knows.

This is actually just a domestic variety of the Mallard. This duck is often found in captivity and is bred to produce some strange offspring, this is just one of them.

Not a duck expert but maybe a molting thing going on? I see alot of wierd stuff in the spring here in Michigan when the "ugly" winter flight feathers are be replaced with the lovely "mating" feathers?? I have a friend who comes around that is a wildlife bioligist, i'll ask him.
