View Full Version : 20D lockups?

Perhaps this can be the official 20D lockup thread? I have yet to personally experience any lockups of my 20D, but I only have taken about 400 shots since last Wednesday. There is a lot of buzz that many 20D owners have been experiencing random lockups, and some have been able to reproduce the lockups. Apparently, some claim that when removing, then reinserting the CF card in combination with changing lenses, and then powering on the 20D they then experience the lockup. The only way to get out of the lockup is to remove and reinsert the battery. Supposedly the cameras were mainly purchased from B&H, but there is no clear indication as it stands now that B&H has a bad batch of 20Ds. I did not purchase my camera from B&H, I purchased mine from Woodland Hills Camera, and I have yet to experience any such lockups. This concerns me if it really is a bug in the 20D, and it is unknown if it is fixable via firmware, or needs to be sent in for repair. I hope this isn't what we get for jumping on the 20D bandwagon so soon!

my camera arrives this week, I'll be a "little" upset if it locks up at all...

There have been numerous(>40) posts of the 20D locking up, particularly after changing CF cards and lenses with the camera turned off. Check out:

I had that problem twice with in 24hrs of receive. It was certainly the case that after I change my lens it locked up. I bought from B&H.
After that two times it never happened again. I tried to reproduce the lockup but did not happen.

Should owners of locking cameras post their camera's serial number so we'd know if this happens to a particular batch, or to early or later units, etc?

I too have caused my 20D to lock up. Body was bought through OneCall.com on the West coast. If I turn power off, remove card, insert card, switch lens or remove and mount same lens, and turn power back on, I have a lock-up/freeze-up. Battery removal and replacement clears everything up. I have sent an email to Canon Service to start my case study.
Has anyone lost any images when this happens? I will check this out tonight. At this point, if no images are lost then it is just an inconvience. The camera's speed and low light focusing have won me over dispite the lock-up.
Let's keep the pressure on Canon for a fix and soon.

Mine locked up yesterday, purchased in British Columbia. I fully expected it would, as I also expect every 20D out there to eventually lockup. My camera shop didn't seem to willing to refund the deposit, so I had to go along with the purchase. From what I've read in other forums, Canon is already going into denial mode. Don't expect any recognition of this issue from them, but like I said elsewhere here, wait for those $50 coupons after the class action lawsuit is settled.

Hey Senster, I bought my 20D from Woodland Hills too, and it locked up twice in 4 days (once when I was in the middle of shooting). I just opened the battery door, removed the battery and reinserted it and it worked again.

I returned it to Woodland Hills and they are sending me another one. They have been very pleasant to work with.

Anyone lose images after a Lock-up? Did everyone contact Canon Service yet? If we all call or send emails, they will have to acknowledge the problem.

I dont think I would go through the hassle of returning it. i'm sure in a few days weeks we'll see a firmware to fix it

I just ordered mine from DELL. hope I dont have problems with it

I have just received 2 Canon 20D bodys from B&H Photo.
Both cameras FREEZE UP when you turn the power switch off
then change lenses (I only have non IS lenses) and return the power back on. The only way to regain camera function is to remove the
battery and return it. I am very carefully packing everything back up and Fed-xing it all back to B& H for a refund, until CANON (I hope you are reading this) figures out a fix.

I want to say that CANON Cameras are excellent, world class cameras.
The very, very best. They have a problem, with the 20D that needs fixing quickly.

I have always had a good experence with B&H as well.
Maybe they just have a bad batch of 20D cameras.

The other night when I was shooting with the kit lens indoors with onboard flash there were a few times where the shutter wouldn't fire, but when I adjusted my zoom and focused on something else in the room it seemed to work which was odd, not really a lockup I guess.

Until there is a firmware fix for the supposed 20D lockup issue, perhaps if just connecting the camera via USB to transfer pictures, rather than removing the card from the camera will help avoid lockups? Just a thought, since the 20D has USB 2.0 built in, perhaps there is less of a need to remove the card and put it in a card reader. I know that the DRebel was only USB 1.1 and it was torture to transfer pics directly from the camera to the computer, and that's why I got the USB 2.0 card reader.
Just a thought I guess if removing the card and switching lenses does actually cause the 20D lockup...

How do you use your 20D? Or how long each time 1HR 8HR?? When my 20D locked up I was using it for around 6 hours at a Wedding I have it set to go off in 4Min if I am not using it. When I press the shutter button it should wake up and be ready to shoot. It worked fine most of the event then when I went to pick it up and use it after 30 Min it would not wake up I tried cycling the on/Off switch and it would not turn on at all. So I put it down and picked up one of my 10D's and kept shooting. I all ways use 2 Body’s one on the camera strap on my shoulder with the 70-200 F4 10D And one on the camera bracket with the 17-35 F2.8 L 20D. And one spare body in the bag just in case I need it set up and ready to go with the 24-70L and 550EX flash. The thing of it is when you are busy it really rattles you up when a camera goes down. Most of the time it is when you really need it most and things are busy. I had to run to my bag when the 20D would not wake up and pick up the spare I just did not have time to figure out why it was not working. When I had time later I took out the battery and it woke up from it's sleeping break. I now have the Grip so it will be easer to remove the battery if I need to again. Once mounted to the bracket is is not easy to remove the battery with out the grip. You must remove the camera from the bracket and then take out the battery and then re-attach the camera. Very time consuming process. So we will see if the 20D needs more sleep time this weekend. This time around I will be ready! :x If need be :?

I've had one lock up after changing lense & not turning the camera off.
I've also had one error 99 & that was during a shoot when I change CF cards in fact the same card that I was using in my 10D & I had my first error 99 then. So far I'm very happy with my camera I've shot over 2000 pics in the last week and a half. I'm sure in time there will be a new firmware to upgrade.
