I have a Sony Camcorder that I bought approx 7 years ago. I think I paid around $2000 for it. Anyways....we tried to use it (for the first time in 3 years) over New Years and it didn't work. The battery was brand new so I know the camcorder is broken. My choices are to get it fixed or buy a new one. I was looking at the Canon ZR800 (cheap and uses the same tapes as my sony). Does anyone like or dislike this camcorder? I am not sure if I should spend the money fixing one that is 7 years old or just buy a new one. Of course, we will not use this for snapping digital pictures. That is why I am looking at the ZR800 instead of the 830 or 850. Thanks for your input.

I use 2 - the Canon Elura and the Canon GL-2. :) I have no idea how they compare to the ZR800, but they work quite well for me.

Heh. I revived my wife's ancient RCA video camera. That's so old it actually takes VHS tapes.

I'm also looking for opinions, is Sony better than Canon?

It's depends... I normally don't buy alot of Sony products, they look really nice though, and stick with Canon for electronic stuffs since I know more about it than Sony.

However, I just bought my first ever Sony LCD and DVD players last week. :)

If your Sony is a VX1000 or VX2000, I would be tempted to get it fixed since they are decent 3chip cameras.
Canon and Sony would be my choices for miniDV cameras, Canon first then Sony.

Why use a camcorder? There are some digital cameras that will take 90 minutes of decent video on a 4GB SD card.

I have a ZR10 and a ZR850. They are both decent cameras and make fairly good DVD's.

Our first camcorder was an 8mm Canon back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. More recently we had a DC-10 (mini-DVD) with 10X zoom which was okay but I sold it and now have a Panasonic 3CCD model PV-GS320 (mini-DV) that captures much higher-quality images. In part this is due to the mini-DV format which is better than the mini-DVD format so far for quality and in great part due to the 3CCD sensor compared to the single CCD sensor in most medium-priced camcorders.
