View Full Version : Do we need a Miscellaneous Gear Forum?

I know that this is not a democracy, but just for the hell of it….

I have just posted in the EOS forum looking for advice on tripods, I don’t think this is the correct forum to post it in, but I really wanted to get it in front of the serious “gear heads” and I know that that forum is where they live :D :) .

I think this may have come up before but do you think there is a place for a Miscellaneous Gear Forum where we can all talk each other into bankruptcy by buying all the really cool peripheral photographic items?

i'm pretty sure that would make forum looks much nice and neat, and we know where to go for straight answers.

my vote goes to "yes"

of course, if it doesn't give too much extra workload to the server itself.

Yes. That way we know where to go when we want real answers about real questions, and don't want to have to slog through all the whining 1D Mk II owners who were upstaged by the 1Ds Mk II and the 20D early adopters who've discovered that Canon changed things when they designed the new camera.
:{)#

And I'll be whining along with the best of them as soon as things settle down enough for me to get to a store to order something new.

Don't forget that a new forum puts an extra strain on our moderators, who have to slog through all the whining to find numerous posts in the wrong forum....

Although, I have to admit that it makes sense. EOS does get all that extra fluff, and we need all the room we can get for 20D threads.

:D :D

i think there should be a 'pro' gear and 'non-pro' gear forum.

1D, 1Dmk2, 1Ds, 1Dsmk2
D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 300D

Personally I think we’re getting a bit “neat freak” in this forum. I’m half expecting to be told to “tidy my room” every time I sign on here.

If you post a tripod question in the EOS forum then it’s probably because you want a tripod to sit your EOS camera on. Sounds fair enough to me.

I think Cadwell is right, you can't have a seperated forum for every subject that has something to do with our photography gear

If an item is applicable only to SLRs, it should be in the EOS forum. Otherwise, discussions of equipment should be in 'Talk About Photograpy.' We're already getting overlapping boards, although we all seem to be getting along quite nicely with the current lineup.

Just one person's opinion.

......keeping head low :? .. I still want to "ditto that"...

As it is when a CF question comes up that has nothing to do with EOS I might move it.. but when it is what CF for an EOS camera.. it stays..

Not to mention (o-kay I will) what Scottes points out.. it just means that now instead of moving 8-10 threads a day OUT of the EOS forum.. now I'll be moving 25 a day.

Hopefully we can find at least one other point of agreement.

Since the cameras in the different boards are so widely divergent I don't think it would work so well. In the case of tripods, I don't think most of the 'Small Compact Digitals' even have a tripod socket, so that wouldn't apply to them, and if the G series crowd wanted one they likely wouldn't have the same need as the EOS folks. And they can't get to their sensor to even think about getting a rocket blower.

Either way would be fine, but I voted no.

The EOS forum that you mention is actually the EOS digital forum, so EOS film SLR discussions don't seem to have any place there. Film SLR would go in Talk About Photography, I would think.

Valid point, Bob; this is a Canon Digital Photography Forum. Most of the folks who even bring up film photography do so either as a matter of nostalgia, possible backup camera, in anticipation of purchasing a digital camera, or even the failure to read the title at the top of the page. On the other hand, much of the function of the EOS system covers both film and digital, so it seems there should be some flexibility there.

I'm sure not offended when I see a film question in the EOS forum (as long as it's an EOS film camera being discussed.)

I'm with Cadwell. Things like tripod, monopod, CF cards, and many others are very related to digital EOS.

I've never seen a small compact without a tripod mount...
Anyone knows a cam without a tripod mount ?

oh... btw I voted yes because there are really sometimes accessories that don't fit in any camera forum or that would fit in every camera forum (tripods ...)

Nope, but then there are tripods and TRIPODS. What is appropriate for a digital SLR often isn't appropriate for a compact. There are issues of size, ruggedness etc. So a general tripod discussion isn't necessarily that helpful.

For example, when I bought my 10D the people I bought it from included a small "table top tripod" as a "free gift". It was one of those bendy, pipe cleaner leg type things which the 10D would have squashed flat if I'd tried to use it. Fine for a small P&S I'm sure.

If you post a tripod question in the EOS section, then people can at least assume that you want it for a large, heavy camera and post accordingly. Also you can be reasonably certain that the people answering have experience of tripods for that size of camera and not something the size of matchbox.

I agree... in parts...
I also have a tripod you mention that does not support more than 200 g or it bends uncontrollably.
But on the other side, I have the Manfrotto 345 (http://www.manfrotto.com/product/templates/itemalone.php3?itemid=781) which supports up to 3 kg, which I have already used with my ixus 300, my g3 and EOS500 (film) (and sure my future(end of the year) 20D) and a remote flash and my vidcam ... and is really handy so this would fall in the category tripod for general use.
I guess there are a lot of accessories which are better examples than a tripod to illustrate the point of having a separate accessories forum...

I don't think that a separate forum will be a problem. If I need a tripod suggestion, I have to state my use and my gear even in EOS forum. For example, a tripod is quite different for a 500mm lens vs 50mm lens.

Yet I voted "No".

There are not many posts here. Can anyone tell me when is the post regarding tripod heads?

To save administrative work, it is not necessary for the moment IMHO.

Are you going to eat all 3 of those yourself? :P

I voted no.

I have to agree about things like tripods CF cards etc being very camera spefic.
The tripod I use on my A80 folds up to something smaller than my forearm and weighs about as much as the camera, my g/fs tripod, for her film SLR, is at least twice as big. It would be overkill for my A80, but my tripod would be dangerous for her SLR to sit on.
Same with our camera bags, hers is huge, it has to be to hold the extra len's. Mine is just big enough for the camera, spare batteries and a spare CF card.

And of course form a moderating perspective (something I do elsewhere) more forums = more work. However, it can also mean more growth, generaly more sub forums = more members. It often works as an extra hook to attrack more people. If growth is something Peka is after (with all its advantages and disadvantages) then its not a bad idea.

However, I was attracted to this forum because of its small size.
There are literely hundreds of digital camera forums on the net now, but most seem to have what IMO are to many subforums. dpreview for example has one for every manufactor, and then sub forums under each manufactor, as well as general photoragphy forums. Its far far to easy to miss useful advice, and depending how its moderated its very easy for members to form little cliques.
This place is quite the opposite, it has a nice number of forums that are easy to look through, and a small number of very knowledgeable and very active members who don't seem to mind looking after the new guys who know next to nothing about photography (i.e. me).

If extra subforums were needed I would say it would be in the
"share photos" forum where it seems to be the norm for a whole page of new replies to show up every day. This can make it hard to find a thread you interested in and makes it very easy for interesting threads to fall to a page 2 death.

The A20 I used to have did not have a tripod socket, and I believe some of the small 'S' series don't have them either.

You posted on correct forum, if question was about accessories for EOS. See descriptions on front page:

Canon EOS digital cameras
Everything about digital EOS cameras, lenses, accessories and usage.

Keeping the layout simple ensures that most people see most new posts. If some post is totally in wrong place mods will move it with a link to new location.
