Another potential advantage of support is it does allow greater interaction with the subject to get them to react/smile etc. as you can trigger remotely. Drawback is that your movement is limited, but in a more formal posed setting (say with a backdrop in a studio) that's not really an issue. For informal shots the benefits of movement may outweigh the drawbacks especially outdoors with higher shutter speeds anyway.
