Which lens You need depend on what You want to shoot.
You can find lots of suggestions of good lenses in the forum. If a lens is good on 1d MK II, 10D or 300D or other EOS cameras then it will also be good on 20D.
Oops just saw You mentioned mid range. The 70-200 mm f4 L is an excellent mid range lens. And it is affordable.

The Canon EOS Beginners' FAQ (http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/) has a section on lenses, that should give you an overview. It doesn't mention the newest lenses, but at least it should give you some idea of what is available for Canon EOS cameras.

Do you already have the camera?
If not, be sure to get the kit lens with it if you want to take wide angle shots (e.g. landscapes, architecture, interior)...
It's about the only cheap way to get real 28 mm coverage.
Best regards,
Andy
