Glad to be of help. I think it's nice that in this expensive activity of photography, something can be so inexpensive. AND knowledge of the lighting process is the most important thing a person can have.

I see POTN member Mike Fulton is on the DVD. He's about as top-end as any contributor on this forum.
I wanna be one of those presenters. Spend five months travelling the country, present a half-hour portion of a seminar each day and cash the check.
Ed Pierce has this thing figured out. The trade show vendors pay for the space and the atendee fees are gravy. Still a pretty good deal since you get a DVD set in the package.

Don't bring any equipment other than a camera and a fast lens, to permit you to capture photos of any setups you think are useful to accompany any notes to take for yourself. I see people bring shoulder bags full of gear, as if it were a hands-on workshop...nope. Notepad and pen.

You run the risk of someone thinking you are recording the session and then going out to sell the tapes and cheat the show organizers of money from other attendees!

My in-laws used to tell the story of their friends ridiculing them for moving from The City to Foster City because it's built on landfill and that it would crumble and sink at the first major quake. I was living there in '89 and the extent of my damage was one cracked decorative plate and temporary loss of phone service for a day.
At my age, I could be dead and gone before it goes under.:)

Having just attended the Boca Raton, Florida seminar, I can give a short review. The schedule was 12:30-1:30 for the trade show and then 1:30-4:30 for the seminar itself.
The trade show consisted of about four vendors. The first was PhotoVision. They were selling their various DVD's at a nice discount. The DVD's that were normally priced at $149 were $99 here. If you purchased three $99 sets, you would get a fourth set free. They also had their digital calibration targets available for a reduced price.
The second table was Canon. They had several cameras and lenses for you to play with. They also had the magnesium frames of a couple of cameras which was pretty neat. The third table was WHCC. They had many print samples including canvas prints and albums. One nice takeaway was a set of six pictures on each of their different paper options. The final booth was Collages.net. They were showing high end albums (a 40 page sample they were displaying cost $510, for example).
There were also numerous large prints on display of Ed's work. Very nice stuff! Several small televisions were arranged on tables, each showing a video clip. Then a large print from that sequence was also displayed on the table.
Up in the front of the room, several lights were used to illuminate a display head. A large video screen was also set up. There were about 20 rows of seats and each row was about 20 seats across. I'd estimate about 300 people were in attendance.
Much of the seminar was pre-recorded video segments, similar to what you might see on the Photovision DVDs. Ed generally introduced each segment with a short talk. He also gave brief demonstrations of some of the equipment he brought. For example, he showed how the intensity of the flourescent lights could be changed by disabling each bulb individually, which didn't affect the light's color. Ed also talked a bit more than just the segment introductions.
There was a 15-20 minute break at about 3:45. Before and after the break, drawings were held for prizes. Most of the prizes were DVD sets. One person was also selected to be entered into a drawing for a Canon 40D. They're giving away one camera for each 16 cities in the tour. During the break, Ed was available for questions. After the break, three more video segments were shown.
So was it worth it? I think it was a great deal. I would have liked to see more live and less recorded information. But there was still a ton of great content. The main take-home is a two DVD set with another four hours of presentations.

Hey, thanks for the review. It's a bit disappointing to hear that most of the seminar was pre-recorded, but then the price is really nice.
Did you get the feeling you learned something new?

I learned about a lot of things. If you're familiar with the bi-monthly Photovision DVDs, then you'd be comfortable with the content in the seminar. Many of the segments showed how various professionals work. There were also segments on basic lighting (broad vs short vs profile, etc) and on how to use Lightroom to improve your workflow.

it depends IMO, for me, I'm a newbie photog and this was my 1st seminar, so I feel that I learnt alot, plus, it's always nice to see the work of others.
but if you are a seasoned pro, i think it's still good, cause i saw quite a handful of hands go up when Ed Pierce asked who knows him and attend his previous seminars.
19 bucks is good money IMO for a 1st seminar

I'll be going to the one in Cleveland (which isn't actually in Cleveland, but that works out well because it's closer for me). So, there's at least one in 9 pages worth of posting...
And as for no photogs in Ohio, that just makes it easier to find something/someone to take pictures of/for.

I'm curious... is the pre-recorded presentation also on the DVD set? If not, would I be allowed to video tape the thing, as I tend to forget stuff.

I've been looking for some seminars and they were either too far away or a bit too expensive. I signed up for the Indy session in May as I figured I've wasted more than $19 on a lot less. Heck for $19, I'm going to see if the wife wants to go or my father just for the heck of it.
Thanks for the heads-up on the seminar and the discount code!

I plan on going to the Cleveland one as well. I just asked the wife b/c it's the day after her birthday and I have to make sure we have nothing else planned for the weekend. I'm always looking to meet some new people who take pictures in Cleveland. Give me shout sometime.

I'll be attending either Nashville or Memphis. I'm in the process of transferring from the latter to the prior, so probably will be Nashville.

I ordered the Irvine California one before I had my classes. and one of my classes calls right during the time of the seminar I have tried contacting them about a week ago about a refund or to get the dvds sent to me, and i have not gotten a response yet. Does anyone want the ticket? I would rather it not go to waste.
