It's the best lens you're going to get for the money. And it's a very good lens. You should own one.

Seriously, easily the best value lens canon make!
Very sharp, great for low light, tiny & light with a large aperture for shallow depth of field effects.
The drawback are:looks and feels cheap and it's not a zoom.
Some complain about the plastic mount but it's all old wives tales. The mount is fine.

I have some good example pics (against the 18-55 kit lens) but these images are not online.Let me know if you want to see them and i'll email them.
I suspect many others better organised than i will post great example pics

Almost everyone here owns the Thrify Fifty 50F1.8II.
You will be inundated with sample pictures here shortly.

As Scottes says, you will not find a sharper lens anywhere for that money.
In fact, you will be hard pressed to find a sharper lens PERIOD :)

It's almost as sharp as the big $$$ 70-200L lenses, and is just a hair below the 85F1.8 and 135F2L lenses for optical quality. Considering that last lens cost almost 10x as much, that's pretty darn good.

The 50F1.8II cuts corners in build quality as it is plastic, but it's still pretty decent in that respect. The tremendous optics MORE than make up for that.

I don't have many samples that do the lens justice.
This one (http://www.fotop.net/sharpnsmart/novice2004/CRW_0711) isn't bad and but is a good example of what a great low-light lens this is. It was shot at F2.0, ISO400.

hey dave!

are you from the gold coast in QLD ? cos i have my 50mm 1.8 up for sale on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3840879357#description

as for thoughts on the lens...well i was extremely, and still am very happy with the lens and the photos that i have been able to capture with it. but the oppurtunity for me to buy a 50mm 1.4 came up so i took it!....it would seem that yes, the 1.4 is a better lens but it is also almost 3 times the price!

for the money i dont think anything can compare for 'bang for ya buck" for a lens of that length!

and basically whats been previously said by everyone else :)

A very sharp lightweight lens. Primes are always good .. these ones are exceptional. They just feel/look cheap (and nasty) .. fit a lens hood .. that will make it look better

A very nice lens, but a little long on a 1.6 crop.

Here is a sample on a D30:

I have two of them - they really are that damn good.

For the price - best value in the entire world of photography IMO.

On one of them the aperture blades got stuck (took it to bottom of grand canyon and bumped it around quite a bit).

So I bought another while my existing one was in repair (free).

Now the broken one is good to go and my newer one functions just the same.

It's my most important lens since a lot of my photojournalism assignments have me doing indoor portraits so it doesn't hurt to have an extra copy..

A very good lens, at a dirt cheap price.

Used on a digital SLR with a 1.6x "crop" factor, it performs equivalent to a short tele (80mm, 35mm format equivalent). Which I find to be a most useful length, since for a long time my "walking around" kit consisted primarily of a [film, 35mm] SLR body, a moderate wide angle lens of 35mm, and a short tele of 80 or 85mm, both lenses in the f/1.4 - 2.0 range.

(A full "photojournalist's kit" of the time often consisted of 2 SLR bodies, the aforementioned 35mm and 80mm lenses, as well as a 24mm wide angle and a 200mm long tele. And a Vivitar 283 flash, of course. Hey, back then zooms weren't respected as highly as they are today, and primes were/are faster than even big, heavy, expensive zooms. Although the 24mm was considered an ultra-wide for a long time, eventually the 20mm came to challenge it. And some 200mm lenses were replaced with 80-200mm zooms, as telephoto zooms improved over the course of time.)

Anyway, the 50mm f/1.8 has mediocre build quality, and it's not quite as good optically as the 50mm f/1.4 - although it comes respectably close. But for the price, it's a no-brainer - buy one. Even if you already have a zoom that covers the 50mm focal length, I can guarantee that the zoom's not as sharp as the 50mm prime, and I can doubly guarantee that it's nowhere near as fast.

Oh, and while I'm a big believer in lens hoods, don't waste your money on the Canon hood and hood attachment for this lens. Just buy yourself a collapsable rubber lens hood for $5. Not so much to guard against flare - the front lens element of the 50mm f/1.8 is recessed quite a way, such that the lens scarcely needs a hood for flare reduction. But the rubber hood provides some protection for the lens. This protection, plus the low price of the lens itself, are such that I usually don't even bother using a UV filter for protection of this lens, even though I do use a UV protective filter on some of my other lenses.

BTW, a newcomer to the world of Canon, looking to put together a lens kit of great versatility, high quality, and reasonable price, could do much worse than to buy a used (mint condition) 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens for $225 or so, the 50mm f/1.8, and a 70-200 L f/4. This 3 lens kit would extend from moderate wide angle (32mm, in 35mm equiv., assuming a 1.6x factor) to fairly long telephoto. Optical quality would range from very good (the 20-35mm zoom) to outstanding. There'd be 1 fast lens. No huge gaps in focal length. And the total bill for the 3 lenses would probably run about $795.

I love this lens on my DRebel/300d
You really can't go wrong with it.
Like already mentioned it's
fast
sharp
contrasty
and cheap

Here is just a snapshot i took but it gives great results.
