Pekka,

I have used EE for several years and have posted 275 galleries and 50k photos, so obviously I have a lot invested in it.

However, I am quite concerned about the lack of development -- the last update was 12/06. Key features like a light table, integrated shopping cart, etc., are badly needed.

I fully understand that EE is developed on a part time basis and appreciate the efforts that you have been put into it. However, if EE is not going to be developed any further, please let us know so we can make future plans.

I suspect that you would like to continue develop EE, but are simply time constrained. If so, have you recently considered open sourcing EE or pulling together a team of volunteers to work on EE?

Deven

One small comment - Anything written completely in php is very modifiable. It might not fit the legal definition of open source, but you can see from these forums that several people have written mods to Pekka's code.

I do not have plans to quit coding for EE. I'm taking a break, as I took after 1.5.

I have considered Open Source possibility, but there are things that I fear will happen when there is a team of people coding it. If I have no time to code myself, equally I do not have time to debug other people's code (usually even harder to read). Open source would mean also that I should be the project leader, to maintain the quality and logic, UI and standard of operations. I fear that that will take more time and typing.

I also must find Open Source licence that does not allow selling EE commercially.

Most open source projects are full of people who are interesting in programming, not making applications.

If, and I strongly emphasize if, I contact people who have skills like AJAX integation, SSH protocols, template writing (CSS designers) and are more interested in functionality, stability and easy readability than converting all to latest fashion of classes and coding standards, I might be interested in forming Open Sourcing EE group.

Pekka, I noticed you're using EE 2.04 on your own site. Will this version be available for public as well? Have you coded any big changes?

I am looking forward for the new version!

No.

He took a few years of break before deciding to go OpenSource... expect him to take a few years between the announcement (july 2008 ) and the moment you see it happen. He said so july 2008. We're 9 months later. Do you see any sign of it? If you're a developer, you should be able to have full access to EE by the time Canon will include 24-70 kit lenses with 1Ds Mark V for under $699, I presume. Prince William's daughter will be Queen of England by then. The way this thing is conducted is insulting, especially to those who PayPal-ed.
