Hi all - have lurked and occasionally chipped in, but want to share a story.
Pre 2001 - different Pentax bodies etc (boo hiss I know)
2001 - EOS 3000 to EOS 30 with standard 28-90 and 80 -200 crap lenses
2002 - Added Powershot G2 - subsequently sold all film kit to "go digital"
2003 - Sold G2 to fund Nikon CP5700 - flame at will :-)
2004 - frustrated with poor af performance of 5700, sold off and bought DRebel. Added Thrifty & Nifty 50, 85 1.8, Canon 100-300. Added hack. Convinced myself that with 20D coming I had to have 10D for the minimal benefits so sold off the 300D - kept all glass. Then won an eBay auction for a 10D in the crossover - here is now where the situation goes pear-shaped. Seller has never delievered 10D, I have paid already and have credit card Companies and Paypal/eBay investigating. Hopefully that will have a somewhat happy ending somewhere down the line. :x Acquired EOS 5 to feed my habit (and scanner). Miss 300D and affordable digital dSLR greatly - have re-bought another 300D.
So, in summary have gone from film to digital&film to digital to film to digital&film and in the process have "lost" a 17-40 and perhaps 28-70 in spending value.
The morale of the story (for me at least) - understand what you need and require and how they are different. Have an equipment plan - this list, for example, is a great liberator of cash from wallets due to the honest and practical appraisal of kit that I might not be exposed to otherwise. Spend time making photographs and images rather than spending time spending money to help make photographs better/easier. Beware of eBay - I have had 705 good ebay transactions, but two bad ones make you think - especially when one is worth over 700 pounds sterling - 1100 USD.
This is a fun place to hang out and learn and I think all of us learn at least something new each week, but for newbies/amateurs/interested others, it can be a VERY addicting environment :D
