Hi all,

Did a search and went through half a dozen threads and couldn't find anything on this. Anywho... I keep hearing about a new 5D that is coming out but couldn't find anything on when they are "supposes" to announce it's release. Does anyone know when it is expected to be released?

Thanks!

Didn't find a bunch of unsubstantiated rumors on a Photo forum?

Must have really been confusing!

I really hope the 7d comes out soon. I want to get the 5d now. but I dont believe the 12 megapixel will be sufficient for my shooting style. I will most likely purchase the 7d the day it enters stores. i currently use the 30D. I am intrested in getting a L lens for it. which one should I purchase?

Hahaha... this is the funniest post all day. You should definitely get the 600mm f/4 IS L. Together with your 18-55mm kit lens you have all bases covered.

Sad to see this forum welcome new members in such a fashion.

24-105L f/4 IS is a great walk around on a ff sensor.

Ryan, 12 mp is plenty. The 5D sensor is amazing. Upgrading to replace my 5D, Canon better build something WOW. I came into the forum with a 10D and a 28-135. Now look at me. Read and learn. Unfortunately, you spend as well. :)

Hey Ryan. I'm not saying it's good to jump all over someone, but I think the other fellow was saying (in maybe not the best way) that you need to provide some more details in order to get some good feedback. You know the old adage, "Help me help you".

I fell into the same trap as Suzy. I entered this forum about a year ago with ZERO dSLR gear and look at what I have now. This forum can be a great resource if you ask the right questions, but it can also be a money trap.

If you do get a FF body, and w/o knowing exactly what you shoot and what your "style" is, I'd also say the 24-105 is a wonderful all-around lens. It was one of my first lenses and I've loved it. I was using it almost 90% of the time until I got my 85L which I'm using at least 50% of the time now.

I shot film for years and just got back into SLRs (now digital) and found that you won't really know what you love to shoot until you've done a lot of shots with an all-purpose lens like the 24-105. Plus, that lens can be had for a pretty good price now.

i agree with everything you said. i'm new into photography. I am self teaching myself it. i am coming from a powershot s3is. I have had a 30d for a year and a half now. i have always shot auto. but now i want to shoot manual. and the 30d and the kit lens just isn't doing it for me anymore. i was the photographer for my high-school yearbook. which i took thousands of pictures for, even though I have graduated i am still helping out with the yearbook. I do sporting events, football and baseball usually. and i like taking portraits. i was looking at the 1dmkIII body but i think its way out of my skill level. I love taking pictures of my family and just candid things. i love nature. i mean i have spent months on the internet trying to research this. but thats why i have joined this. To talk to people who actually know a thing or 2 about cameras not the local know-nothing at bestbuy. i just do not know what would be right for me. and i am kinda at a stand still. i mean i dont mind spending money. i mean this is just a hobby i dont need the 1dsmkIII.

thanks

SunTsu gave good advice. to answer that question you have to know what you want to shoot...landscapes, streetscapes, people, macro, sports, product, paparazzi style, etc.

If you don’t know what you want to shoot yet, as i didn’t when i started, you want what is called a walk around lens. This is a versatile lens, it will be a zoom that can capture everything from wide angle thru to a moderate zoom and allow you a lot of flexability in what you shoot. When i started with a 20D i used the 17-85 IS, great lens...about the same reach as the 24-105 due to the cropped sensor.

I found this book very helpful when i was in your situation: http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Digital-Photography-Techniques-Pictures/dp/0817437967/ref=pd_bbs_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199995272&sr=8-4

And if you don’t mind spending money, pick me up a 3D/7D/5DmkII when it comes out please:)

ryan.. you can go really wrong with some lenses.. cheaper doesnt always mean your going to get great images.

i learned the hard way. and now i have been unloading them on other poor saps who dont know any better. lol.

if you want a good every day walk around to go with your upgrade. someone had mentioned the 24-105L that is a fabulous lens. and most buyers are incredibly happy with it.

and it seems to cover a bit of everything.. a little wide too a pretty good zoom.

i would also suggest a 50mm 1.4 with hood. you will not regret that lens.. it is awesome, and i love it. its sharp, fast, and i use it every single day. its my favorite.

if you dont have a flash already. you will need one with your upgrade.

and welcome to POTN. you will meet lots of nice people ( some not so nice) and you will learn and learn and learn.

have fun with your 30d for now, and upgrade your glass till you can see what the replacement does.. youll probably want to hold off a couple of months just to see if there are issues being reported with it.

hugs.

thanks for your help. i might have to pick up that book. i was looking at the 17-85 IS lens but i think it would be kind of a waste of money being that im looking to purchase a ff body with in this next year that wont accept the ef-s style lens. i was looking at the 24-105L but i just dont know if that will hold me over with my 30d until i get a new camera. i just got to do something the 18-55 is useless.

NP. Ya, if your going ff, dont get the EFS, the 24-105 will give you about the same range on the ff.

Ryan, this is.. confusing.
The 30D is a fantastic camera. No doubt about it. I would like to know how, after a year and a half of only using "auto", you feel you have outgrown the 30D already? Many people will take years to master this camera, you seem to have done it instantaneously?
I don't recommend getting a new camera based on this statement. A new lens, maybe, but the camera will take a while to master.

i have used the 5d before. it is pretty much the same as far as use as the 30d. just a lot better sensor and i can actually see more out of my lens. i have recently just started shooting manual. i mean i have not masted my camera by any means. but i just want something that can take a little better qualty pictures. i have access to many different canon cameras so i mean i have shot with the 5d before. i loved it with the 24-105. i just want to step up my game a little bit if you know what i mean. i agree with the better lens remark. i just dont know what to get because eventually (sooner than later) i will be getting a new camera. and it wont be the 40d. i just have pretty much 0 knowledge on lens.

At the end of the day, it's your money. But for the life of me, the reasons you just stated don't sound at all convincing enough to me to warrant a new camera. You can "see" the same angle from a 30D as a 5D. Yes the 5D's viewfinder is bigger, and brighter, but the 30D is no slouch.
But again, it's your monderos, so if you want it, go for it. As long as you're happy with your own reasons, then enjoy your purchase.

Ryan,

I wish you the best in your new hobby and I am sure most, if not all, of the others on this forum will also. You've gotten very sound advise from the others before me.

I can't help but notice where you are located. If you are in the Orlando area, I would encourage you to attend the Orlando Camera Club meetings. You can check out our website at www.orlandocameraclub.com (http://www.orlandocameraclub.com). Regards of where you are located, I would investigate whether or not there is a club in your area and attend the meetings. You'll most likely find others who are very willing to help you expand your knowledge and help you progress in your area of interest. If you are in the Orlando area, and are interested, drop me an email and I can help if your interested.

Best wishes in photography!
