I am looking at picking up a used Bogen 3021BPro for my first tripod. Is this a good all around model? I have a Manfrotto 322RC2 head already to use. Will weight be an issue with this setup? I am about 5'10" so height should not be a problem.

I do intend to use it outdoors some so I am looking for something that is not too heavy.

thanks for the input and advise!

That's a good model, very sturdy and tall enough for you. The updated version is the 055XPROB. Only difference is the way the horizontal center column feature works. The 055 sells for ~170, just FYI.

It seems some people consider it "heavy". It is a lightweight to me, so it is an individual judgement. I have three of them, two 3021s and a 055 xprob so you know I like them. Again, it is an individual thing. It is a very good pod in MY opinion.

Excellent choice!

I have a 055XPROB and while it is on the heavy side, my only complaint is that the center column gets a little unstable when extended more than a couple of inches (>3in). I also am not too happy wtih the stability when in the horizontal plane. Otherwise it is a great tripod. I use it for macro work. Just use it within its limits. You'll be happy.

You can do a lot lighter if you go CF but it will cost you money. The setup you are looking at will weigh 3kg. That's a brick to me and it would get left at home. YMMV.

I have the 3021 with a 488 ball head and love it. Not the lightest kit but does the job very well. I would not go hiking with it but for the price and how a use a tripod there is no better choice.

I've got one w/ the 488 head & like the combination. It is on the heavy side, but manageable. Took it on several hikes in Zion (Angel's Landing/Hidden Canyon) & Bryce Canyon (Queens Garden/Navajo loop) in November w/o much problem.

My only gripes - it's a little low w/o the center column extended (I'm only 6'), and the center column doesn't seem to work very well. It's hard to extend smoothly when you've got weight on it, and it's a bit wobbly. If I ever save the money to get something bigger than the 100-400 I'd either get a new head or a new setup completely.

Nice start when you consider value for the money though...
