Microsoft has announced a new file transfer protocol for digital images. It is called the Media Transfer Protocol, and Canon is promising to provide support for it in future digital still cameras.

They also are pushing an existing facility, Windows Connect Now (WCN) as part of this.

So, how long do you think it will be before Bill Gates tells you how to take your pictures and makes you 'activate' your ZoomBrowser?

Have Fun,

Like the 1Ds Mk II, or the upgraded BIOS in the 20D and 1D Mk II?

I don't think so. The article in dpreview actually says that Ni*on will demonstrate it at Photokina, but it only mentions Canon as supporting it in products, and it says future. Stay tuned to your favorite Photokina channel. Film at 11.

It is too soon to tell whether this protocol will be accepted, but if it is, even Mac users will not be spared. If it flies, it will become the FTP for image files, and Mac users will wind up using it as well...

Look at the "Communication" setting in the menu on your camera. Most likely you can choose between "Normal" and "PTP".

PTP stands for Picture Transfer Protocol. I don't know where that comes from, but if you put the camera on PTP and connect it to your Windows XP PC, you can see the camera and download photos without installing any additional software. So probably PTP is also a Microsoft invention.

Microsoft is already inside your camera!

MTP is probably just a new or enhanced version of PTP.

Have Fun,

According to the article MTP and WCN are protocols that take advantage of the Windows XP capabilities so I doubt it'll affect the Mac unless Apple decides to jump onto the bandwagon, too, which I highly doubt.

Unless MTP becomes a standard, like FTP - then they will have to provide support.
