I borrowed a friends 28-200 USM, since all I had was the kit lens for my new camera, and needed a zoom.
Well I guess I'll never borrow a lens again, it promptly locked up, it no longer zooms, and the focus won't lock... I didn't drop it or anythign like that I was just using it ... :(
So now I ow my buddy a new lens.
Is it possible to repair these things? is it worth it considering the lens is rougly $370 ? Either way I'll likely buy him a replacement but if it's repairable I might end up with the broken one...

If you contact the Canon repair shop about it, they will tell you the flat-rate labor fee for repairing that particular lens, then parts cost is extra. You might expect that total to be a third to a half of the new street price of the lens.

Oh yeah.. Cheaper to repair as long as the glass isn't cracked. I had a lens get messed up and luckly I had one of the best canon repair facilities in my area... $121 later, works like a champ... PM if you want their # and address... They have been in the business for 28 years and have alot of big clients... you can trust them...

Wow,you are VERY unlucky!!
It sounds like you are not at fault at all
It should definitely be repairable-and maybe for not many$.
Get an opinion from the repairer about what caused the prob.If it's caused by an impact or simply stopped then you will have to wear it to keep your friendship going
If it's caused by corrosion of the electronics then that would easily be provable to not your fault

A little later I was looking at the lens and noticed a light rattle... I took it off the camera and gave it a gentle shake and a tiny screw fell out.
Glad that didn't happen while on my camera, I'd hate to have gotten a scratch on my mirror.
The local repair shop that canon recoments has quoted me $120. So that's not to bad as long as they can get it back into tip top shape. I always worry about such delicate equipment ever being exactly right again.

If they are quoting that low, sounds like the cam....

Yes, I had a Canon zoom lens that suddenly refused to zoom in or out, and a tiny rattle was audible. It was sent to Canon and ended up costing me something like that price.

Yeah, uh huh... Sure..... Try telling canon that... actually, it sounds like it could be the cam and that is impact damage...

Well I know I didn't drop it, but it's posible that it was dropped before and that 'weakened' it. When I told my buddy he wasn't suprised and did mention that he 'used' it pretty heavy, taking it on a lot of trips around the world, including buffalo hunting!
No my working theory is that perhaps it suffered some impact damage that loosened or damaged it in some what, and I just got the bad luck of being the one holding it when it failed. :(
I'm still paying since I feel that whenever you borrow anyones equipment you take on the 'break it fix or replace it' responsibility. Just kinda sh** luck.
