Pure rubbing alcohol might be OK. Not the stuff you can buy, but the stuff a doctor or chemist can buy.

Test your alcohol for purity on a clean glass surface by letting it evaporate and then checking for any residue left behind. Some rubbing alcohols contain an oil additive.

In fact.. if it is called "Rubbing" alchohol.. it is NOT O-kay, as "Rubbing" alchohol by definition is NOT pure.

Rubbing Alchohol is approx 70% alc. The other 30% is water and junk.

You want Isopropyl alchohol of 90% or more.

I couldn't get Eclipse in Hawaii, so I checked with the Photo Department at work and they recommeded Kodak lens cleaner. They use it on their sensors all the time. I went ahead and tried it and was quite pleased. Much easier to get than Eclipse, and less flamable. I used too much the first time and ended up with an evaporation ring the first time, but after a couple of tries, got it to work perfectly.

Rubbing alcohol from the store is 70% alcohol and 30% distelled water (I think that is the right mix). Most lens cleaners aren't much different, so I would imagine it should work.

Why not order Eclipse just to be safe? It's less than $10.

$10.00 for a lifetime supply, really. Why be stingy on your sensor?
