I hate that I cannot open the 20D's RAW files in CS. One of the reasons I got the program was for saving the steps of opening in another program and then converting the file. Any ideas?...Dean

Adobe has probably a dozen new cameras to make CS compatible with. It simply can't release updates to the plug-in every time a new camera comes out. They know everyone is anxious...but it may be several more weeks.

There is a "hack" floating around the internet to the plug-in that modifies Photoshop to recognize 20D files; while it does open the files, people who use it say it's not optimized for the 20D.

Keep an eye on the Adobe Camera Raw (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html) homepage. There will probably an update for Camera Raw in the future to support the new wave of digital cameras.

I'm surprised to learn that Photoshop CS will not open the 20D's RAW files. They are the same as the Mark II's .cr2 files so I just assumed that it would be fine. Did you install the PSCS RAW upgrade that came out just after the Mark II?

If it won't work with the 20D, I wouldn't be too concerned since Abobe will be rushing to get the RAW upgrade out. As someone else has pointed out Adobe will have to produce an upgrade for a dozen or more cameras after Photokina and I suspect that they need to keep it quiet until these cameras and their particular RAW are officially released.

I bet no one would like to release this more than Adobe since I'm sure they've been sitting on it for a month or more. But as you can see on most digital photo sites, the site knows about a new camera well in advance of its introduction as they have enough time to do testing and so forth. But they also have promised to respect an embargo so that the manufacturer gets a common release date and a big bang introduction (although you can't tell from the way that the S Mark II was leaked out :D ).

Adobe MUST know about these RAW properties since the last thing I'd want if I was Pentax or Nikon is to have so reviewer say "Adobe informs us that they will not be releasing a RAW converter for this camera." or even that it would be delayed. Talk about a death knell!

PS CS RAW, can read 20D files, it just does not know about them yet. The plug-in checks the file to see if it is generated by one of the cameras that it supports, if it is, it opens it. That is what the script posted above does, it replaces the 1D Mark II in the plug in file with the 20D (which means, if you have a MK II, DON'T DO THE HACK). Also, when you make this change the WB info is lost so your files look green. Easily fixed by selecting one of the preset settings, but you should keep this in mind.

Depending on the version of CS you are using the camera may not have support on the final plug-in, but I believe that Adobe supported the 20D on the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in release 3.1 for CS2. You might want to search the support pages (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html) for the plug-in that fits your needs.
