View Full Version : Does anyone use the neck strap?

I was just wondering if I'm the only one who uses the Rebel's or heck, the 10D's neck strap when walking around and shooting? The strap is getting more annoying now a days and brings more attention to me then the camera would on its own I've noticed, haha. Anyways, does anyone just carry the camera around itself?

I use a strap, more often over the shoulder than round the neck and this is on a 1D MkII with a 100-300 attached, I do not use the canon strap it's an OPTECH SUPER CLASSIC STRAP™ which is very comfortable and does not get in the way.

always with neck straps attached to my camera body, but i don't always have it round my neck, most times i'll just hold it in my hand or on my shoulder

I won't pick my MkII up without first putting the strap around my neck!!!
It is too easy for me to "accidentally" bump something, or otherwise let things I am holding slip from my grasp. A MkII and an L lens could have a replacement value easily exceeding $6,000.
The neck strap is real cheap insurance in my opinion.
I have upgraded the Canon strap to a more comfortable Op/Tech.

I have OPTECH straps on every camera. They are comfortable, and if you want you can remove the part that goes around your neck and click the two pigtails together to make a short, less noticeable hand strap.

On the Drebel I have the pro model with the little rubber dots and the extra strap, but the regular style will work just as well until you get some monster (heavy) lenses.

Have Fun,

Ya I understand the bumping into things problem.. but the neck strap won't save it from my falling problem.. and by falling problem I mean I fall down with it.. don't ask.. ><

I use the strap wrapped (many times tightly) around my wrist .. keeps the camera in my hand .. I find this best way to carry the camera at car shows and such.

Currently I dont pick up mine without wrapping it around my neck.
I used to wrap my Nikon around my neck over my shoulder (one arm through), and let it hang around the back, but the Canon strap isn't long enough for that so I'll probably get a longer one.
But yes I can see what you mean by it drawing attention, specifically since it says in HUGE letters CANON EOS DIGITAL, hehe.

I prefer the size of a point and shoot but the quality of the dslr... er i'm making another topic about that so I'll shut up for now. haha

I too have used Op-tech straps and like them better that the ones from Canon. However, I am now using the UP-Strap. A different concept in that you hang the camera off your shoulder. The rubber nubs keep the camera from sliding off ( it's really almost impossible to loose the camera) and you can swing the camera forward using tension of the strap to help stabilize the camera. The web site explains it better than I can, but I am getting quite used to it and it's a really unique product.

Is anyone else on the forum using Up-Straps?

I really would like a wrist strap, sort of like the Canon A70's.. Any idea if they make one and where to get it for the Rebel?

that's a big heavy camera for a small wrist strap

Otherwise, since my right hand is invariably clamped to the camera (sometimes with flash), it chafes.

Well, while we're on the subject...which we're not, but I'll hijack the thread...

How about a little string thingy that attaches to the lens cap and to the camera so that you won't lose the cap? Anyone know what it's called? I know there's been one on my mom's SLR for 25 years.

The neck strap goes around my wrist (most of the time) or on my shoulder (some of the time), but never around my neck. That's how I've been doing it for 20+ years and that's the most comfortable way to shoot for me.

I use my D60's strap wrapped around the tripod head. In the event of a sudden detachment, I don't want the camera to take a long fall.

OP Tech Pro loop strap on the body as well as the Canon Wrist Strap. Unbeatable combo.

Canon Wrist Strap!? for the rebel?! WHERE?!

I had OpTech straps on my older (FD) Canons, but with the wider strap that came with the D60, I'm just using that. The "Digital" abrades off nicely if you don't want to advertise . . .

For the lens cap leashes (Sima CapKeeper II is the brand name) or similar, I've used crimp-on terminals epoxied to the lens cap with string to a rubber band for 30 or more years. But the official ones should be available from most photo stores.

Get the Op-Tech Pro, well worth the $20. The difference is really amazing the first time you put it on.

I will never sling a neck strap over my shoulder as someone above mentioned
It is too easy for it to slide off and way too hard to grab it as it falls.

Oddly i often carry the camera by three fingers lightly hooked under the grip and nothing more   ...and have zero problems

Back when I was required to carry a camera, I'd put the camera over my neck then over my solder, no risk of dropping it though it made it somewhat difficult to whip the camera around to take a shot. When I knew I'd have to take a shot right way, I'd just leave it around my neck.

Hello:

All the time. If not around my neck, then looped once around my right wrist. If the camera slips out of my hand, I've got the opportunity to grab it before the camera hits the ground.

If on a tripod, the strap is a great grabber for my external battery pack.

I've always swapped out the Canon for the Domke strap. Doesn't slip off my shoulder and I prefer the thinner strap of the Domke.

Thanks.

I use the Canon hand strap. If one is going to use the neck strap I suggest that they keep it around their neck as much as possible. If not, a dangling neck strap will eventually get caught on some projecting object and snatch the camera right out of one's hand. Camera repairs are not cheap.
