580ex + what slave???

I just got my 20D today!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry but it's been a long month)

Alright so here's the deal, I want to get a 580ex, and I want to get a slave flash too... so am i fine getting a 420ex now and making it my slave when the 580 comes out, or should I get a 550- just to be a slave?
The only reason is that it seems like I could get two 420ex's for the price of one 550ex....

Anyway I'm just throwing this out there, thanks much to who ever can help.

The 420 EX will have better battery life. How ever the 550EX has more control over the 420EX and you can pull off more complicated flash set ups with the 550's VS the 420's. I have 2 550EX and one 420EX. But most of the time I use my Alien Bees with pocket wizards, as they just are faster and easier to use. Also if you cover great distances with the EX lights or have a frequency interferences they will not fire the flash. You need a clear line of sight for them to work well. This is why I stopped using them and just use the Alien bees with the battery pack that they sell. So far I have had the kit with 2-B800’s with the Vagabond 300 Battery and Pocket wizards on each light and 45" Silver umbrellas. It just works great cant beat it. Best of luck with your set up.

Get the 420EX now and then a 580.. that makes sense.. a 550EX for a slave is probebly overkill...

In fact this is exactly my plan. For now I have the 420 :)

I was thinking the 420, I just needed another opinion. But I guess before I do that, I'll have to go see what Alien bees are... :shock: The learning never stops!
