I need lots of good cheap light. Something I can mount on a couple light stands with umbrellas and fill a medium or large size room with light.

Help! Cost effectiveness counts.

If you want Canon wireless support: 420EX for about $125 (including Sto-Fen) - I've got 3 already!

Otherwise, Nikon's SB-24, SB-26, SB28, etc. are all good ones.

Sunpak 383 is a good one

Vivitar (forgot model no.) from Strobist's supplier is also popular.

Let me elucidate this a little more... it's the only one from that line-up that has a built-in optical slave!

Another vote for the older SB's: I've got a core E-TTL II flash pair (580EX, 430EX) but also have an SB-26 and an SB-28 (bought each used for $100 via Craigslist) when I want to go in all-manual mode. If I can get the 430EX within line of site of the 580EX, in conjunction with the SB-26's optical slave feature, all four units can fire using only two Pocket Wizards (well, three, if you count the one on the camera hotshoe). Sassy! :-p
