I never left the house and turned the whole place upside down 5 times! its just gone! Damn! I need to put it in my bag to get ready for my shoot at the snowmobile races, but cannot find the damn cap! Man, i'm frustrated!
Total search hours = 3! :oops::o:evil:

How many others have had the vanishing cap trick happen?I was at work and went to take a pen out of my blazer and FIND a lenscap. So I thought sh**, my lens go not cap so I get home, bypass family and rush up to my camera case to find ALL of my lenses have their respective caps on and I am 100% certain that I do not have any additional lenses. I have also not borrowed or lent any lenses out yet.
Go figure :)

Dude! It is just a lens cap. ;) Step back, breathe, and don't sweat the small stuff. It'll turn up, in the last place you look for it.

 And to think, I thought you dropped a lens or something. In those 3 hours I could have driven to at least a dozen stores and bought another one for a few bucks.
Yeah, I've managed to misplace one once or twice. Heck, I've even found the cable remote in the freezer(went for ice cream during an advertisement).

Haha, this has happened to me so many times that I still do it! It's the excitement of taking pics and ideas flowing through the mind that just pushes out the short term memory of where you "threw" the cap that does it, I reckon :-)
I managed to chop my nail off with a new knife a month ago and just thought, ahh, macro shot of the blood and gore! So I grabbed the camera (after arresting the blood), slapped on the macro lens and shot away. I couldn't find the lens cap and so I used the one on my 18-55 :-) I found it three days later in a drawer in the kitchen!

Lens caps are the bain of my existence. I don't want to buy one of those attachments that let em just hang from the lens, but I lose them on a regular basis. They're ridiculous expensive to replace too ($6-8ish) for just a piece of plastic!

A couple of people I know use those so they don't lose their lens cap. One of them has it on their only "L" lens. I laughed my head off when I saw it, what disrespect on an "L"! They don't need jewellery!

You're just buying something photographic for the sake of it. Getting your fix anyway you can! :-) Buy a new lens and be done with it for the next few months
I'm seriously considering the 85L, even though I don't need it, I need a "red line fix"! I can't sleep at night!

I don't really see what the problem is here. If it works for them. why not?

I bought some of those Tamron caps a while ago and I have some extra caps in each bag. Don't sweat it! Just get some extra ones. Did you check your pockets? I make it a point to always put the lens cap in my jacket right or pants right pocket. If I don't have a pocket, it goes right into the camera bag in the main compartment. If you are completely stressed, get one of those cord things. There are paths to inner peace. :)

lol - yup - it would be the last place - 'cos you wouldn't keep looking once you found it, would you?
To the OP - buy a pocketful of cheap no-name ones and use them - if you ever want to sell a lens in the future, you still have the pristine, unscratched originals ;)

Cause I think it looks silly; can bang into the camera as you flap around and very distracting when you have the lens cap flapping around underneath the lens as you move it around. Imagine if you had one of these (do you?) and you are out shooting candids or fast moving objects. You have an extra weight on the end and everytime you spin off to another scene it bangs into the barrel, or worse, the lens.
It's for tourists IMHO.

I have a couple of spare 77mm and 72mm lens caps for just this reason...helps control the rising blood pressure brought on by keeping track of the photo gear when I'm out shooting :)

Those are valid points. But if the owner finds it convenient to use it, I guess he decided that the pros (not losing the cap) outweigh the cons (things you said). What I find disturbing though is laughing at someone who has this arrangement (on their only L lens, heaven forbid) and labeling such people as tourists. Why be condescending on someone who is clearly loving photography as a hobby?
As for me, yes I used those thingies before, years ago when I was starting out on film SLR's. My father made me use them - he doesn't relish shelling a few buck whenever I lose a cap. Later when I grew older, I junked those gadgets and proceeded to lose several lens caps. Nowadays, I'm back to using them on a couple of my G-series cameras, the ones that I don't use a lend adapter with.
Sorry for getting off topic a bit OP, anyway it is best to develop a habit of putting your lens cap in the same place everytime. For me , it is almost always a shirt pocket, and if I don't have that, my pants' back pocket. I agree with the others here that if you're going to get a replacement cap, get the Tamron type with the center pinch locks. I wish Canon would adopt that design.

You are making a typical assumption here! You don't know the person/people I was referring to. Just because they can afford an "L" lens, doesn't automatically make them a person who "loves photography as a hobby". Because they don't and are "tourists" in the "DSLR world".
Just because someone can earn a sh!t load of money (£200K plus) and can afford to buy the best gear out of their pocket money, it does not make then proficient or capable or willing.
But then, you didn't know that about them ;)

If it makes you feel any better I generally lose my eyepiece every few months. The last one disappeared off the camera while it was on the coffee table. Still haven't found that one.

I lost my 5D battery door for three months. I bought a replacement in the mean time.
I was expecting to read something much worse than losing a measly lens cap... Go get another one.

So...let me get this straight...because you don't use a lanyard on your lens caps and because you think it looks stupid...anyone and everyone that does choose to use one has to be a tourist? Who cares what it looks like on someone else's lens? Hell...if somebody is happy doing that...big deal...even if it is on an L lens...the cap swinging around on a string is certainly not going to damage an L lens...or in all likelihood, any other lens.
For the OP....a ziplock bag and a rubber band will work fine as a temporary cap until you can snag a spare or two. Certainly not an event worthy of having a meltdown.

Erm, No! I did quote ("") the words "tourist" and "dslr world" but I guess that comments written like this is not universally transferrable, if smilies are not provided.
And BTW - When I used their cameras to take shots they both removed their caps because I did happen to bang the cap on the lens as I swung round.
I still think it looks silly

Whenever I go to any new camera store, I ask if they have a junk bin, just to see what I can find, usually it was FD caps or Konica adapters..
But every once in a while, I find the lens caps.... now what is with all those left sox in that bin..:o:o
