whats this mode called?

when you take a picture of a person or thing and everything around the center image is blurry. i remember my older canon having this mode but cant remember what its called.

I think you may be refering to the portrait mode, I think on most of the powershots it is shown as a picture of a head on the dial on the camera

yep portrait mode...you can also get this effect by keeping your aperture small, like 2.6 i think 1/60th shutter....i dunno if you have those options on your camera though.
