Ok, before everyone says that this is a clear answer. Essentially, I see that most people here have a 580ex and then buy themselves a 430ex.
I'm curious as to whether I should purchase another 580ex outright and forget about the 430ex.
Initially I wanted to compliment my 580ex II with a 430ex which I can use with my G9 (smaller, etc) but if I was going to spend about 240 on a 430ex, in the long run, should I just do another 580ex and be done with it.
It seems kind of silly to spend 430ex for a G9 (although it's smaller for that purpose) rather than just living with another 580ex II.
Other benefits would be that I would have two flashes on both my camera's which would be a 580ex.
Arrgghh...help me think this out? What are your opinions?

I'd get the 430EX (a very capable light) and save the green.

If you can afford the 580EX, then why not. I would...and did. :)

I would def suggest that for the lighter uses having a 430EX around is def worth it. I had my 580EX II first and then got the 430EX and I must say that if you already have a 580EX II the 430EX is a nice addition.
However till sunday Jan 13th the 580EX II can be had for only $329 at B&H while the 430EX holds steady at $240... so for $90 more you get quite an upgrade...

Good point on the 90 bucks upgrade. That deal is pretty good.

Yea trust me for $90 its worth it to upgrade. The 580EX II is normally an almost $500 flash.

You know, this second flash idea started of really more for my G9. Something smaller. I then realized that I have my XTI which I need a flash for as well and of course for other uses to do portraits and so forth.
It's either 90 bucks more or 430ex for more portability.

I don't know. I just got my 580EX II today. Love it. :) Plus there's that BH coupon for it ... figured $90 and not worrying about wanting more power later. Here's a picture I tested with the flash and my 24-70L.

I love mine as well. But the question is a smaller 430ex may come in handy. Of course two 580ex would also be beneficial but for the purpose of needing more power, my 580ex would be available, if I need portability, I would have a 430ex. If I need flash for portraits, I have both flash 580 and 430 which would be more than sufficient.....at least that's what I'm thinking.

Dang! I purchased another 580ex II to compliment my 580ex II. There goes my idea of having a smaller flash unit! LOL!

I see that you just said that you bought another 580ex but just wanted to let you know of a thread (embedded below, I hope correctly) of a store in Oklahoma selling 430EXs for $199.99 + 12 shipping. Don't know if this helps any but just wanted to let you know.
