View Full Version : two 10D's and file numbering

Hello:

I’ve had great success shooting weddings digitally with my 10D. I’m planning on adding a second shooting body (another 10D or 20D) for shooting during the events.

A component of my workflow involves renumbering all final files consecutively (after I’ve culled bad shots). How can I achieve consecutive file numbering (most likely in post-wedding workflow) utilizing two bodies for a wedding where I might be shooting up to 1000 shots!

The two bodies would be swapped during the event, so I need to come up with a way to integrate the files from both bodies in the proper "event's order"

Thanks.

use the timestamp from the exif as first part of the filename.
That's how I do it... I have the pictures from my ixus, g3 and vidcam (1Mpix photos) in the same folder...
of course, the clocks in all bodies have to be exactly the same...

pictures are normally named : 20040923_161300_G3_IMG_1234.JPG

There are a number of programs that support bulk renaming of files, including picking up metadata. One I use which has this capability is Picture Information Extractor, from PicMeta Software (http://www.picmeta.com/). The current version's 3.51.

Hello:

Ikinaa' solution will be investigated. Sounds like, right now it might be my best solution.

To simplify my problem a bit, in an attempt to get additional suggestions;
two camera bodies, each with exposures numbered 1 thru 5, but not shot at the same time of day (or night). I've got to merge them into one folder, and then rename in proper order. Now multiply that problem by 100 or so exposures!

Thanks again

How about putting all the photos into the same folder, sorting the folder by "date modified" (which, if the cameras are set to the identical time will put them in shooting order), and then having Photoshop or an equivalent program run a "batch rename" that allows you to name them in numerical order of your choice?

Hello one last time;

Boy, the reply from RSNADL might be the simplest solution yet (I owe you a beer! :P )

It's kind of a moot point right now as I don't have the second body. I'll catalog these responses and try'em when the time is ripe.

Thanks again

You'd have to be sure the numbers from the cameras are in a different range .. can't have 2 filenames the same in the same directory.
