Hi

Fantastic pictures, well done.

Hope to visit the loop for the first time as soon as the weather and light improves.

Until then I'll be practicing in Cumbria.

Yes an amazing video sethmo....enjoyed that!........reminded me of 'Axalp' another very different airshow held in switzerland every October.......For any 'Aviation' shooter 'Axalp' should be on your list of priorities.........its Amazing!........google 'Axalp' and you will see some fantastic avaiation Images.
Steve...yes I live a long way from the 'Mach Loop' so its not worth the expence of travelling etc till we get out of winter........Barry

Barry

I love to see those Mach Loop shots - amazing vantage point(s).

Certainly something I would like to plan on doing, do you have advice as to the 'best' times of the year in respect of the specific locations and on that note how long do you stay in the area. Any outline itinerary, so to speak, would be very welcome, if too complex to post please PM me as appropriate.

TIA :)

Box Brownie......I have PM'd you some links to get some detailed information on locations on 'The Loop' including maps which are available.
The locations are not that hard to find anyway but any detailed information will help you plan your trip.
In a Nutshell head for a village called 'Dinas Mawddwy' on the A470 once you get to Dinas you are right on the loop....contine through Dinas Mawddwy and you will start to climb up into the Bwlch Pass if you look to your left you will see a very high fell and thats the bwlch pass shooting location and you will often see photographers dotted around the hillside up there and its a great location aswell with the sun at your back all day long.....on your left you will see a car park as you drive through the pass.....park in there and walk across and start climbing.
If you carry on driving out of the Bwlch pass follow the road out towards Dolgellau (Still on the A470) look out for a 'T' junction on your left and you will see an old pub called the 'Cross Foxes' (You are Still on the loop here) turn left down the A487 and that will take you down to locations at Cad East, Cad West and Corris Corner.......you will see cader Idris on your right.....theres a car park just as you enter the pass on your right park in there and go over the style and follow the path to the fence line then just climb straight up the fence line and you are at Cad west.In the second shot you can actually see the 2 cars on the A470 going towards the Bwlch Pass.
The weather has a mind of its own in Snowdonia and it can be mixed at the best of times......the best time is between early April to late October when the clocks change to British summer time......you get the long days then and planes are still around at 6.00pm.....but take the weather forecast with a pinch of salt........you can be at Dinas in bright sunshine and at cad west (6miles away) you can't see 12 yards infront of you face!....lol
You do get some nice days though and it is spectacular country to spend some time shooting........and there's nothing like seeing 2 TornadoGR4's bursting out of Bwlch and turning towards you at Cad......its a real adrenaline rush........Go for it Brownie....Cheers Barry

dseered.....yes I am a member at warplane and have a few shots posted there.

jdando......I have to say we are lucky here in the Uk that we get the opportunity to shoot these guys without any hassle.....we just keep things well organised and look after the place.....keep to the footpaths and don't leave any rubbish around.....keep the locals happy.....thanks for looking and commenting.......Barry

FWIW...Carry On.

Get down there Andy and have a look around....your sure to see something if its a weekday......they don't fly weekends (The Tax payer can't afford the overtime!)
If you want to try shooting you will need a 300mm lens minimum to get full frame shots of the jets......Cheers Barry

Lovely photo. I understand, however, these group tours can be quite frustrating. You never get to do your own thing and you're always having to follow the leader...! LOL...

I have sent you a PM with some links for finding locations...have a good read and you will be good to go...cheers Barry.
THANKS for your comments everyone...Im sure there will be a few of you up there in the spring trying your hand at shooting fast jets at Low level.
Its great fun and can be really exciting.......long periods of inactivitiy can be rewarded by some 'awesome' action.
Don't expect too much first time out......its very much a learning experience.
Camera settings for sunshine or reasonable weather should be ISO200 shutter speed 1000th if you can get it.......if conditions are dull and your working with an f5.6 lens than you will have to up the ISO to 400 (Or More).
Select the middle focus point only and get that on the plane as it comes through.......don't try and hack off a loads of shots...take a few shots of each pass and slightly space them that way the AF will pickup the planes as they fly past..........use IR Servo focus were it tracks the subject a good aid for this subject.
After you first trip its just a matter of gaining exerience with your gear.......good luck......don't forget to post some of your shots here so we can have a look at them.........Cheers Barry

Hi Barry

Great shots! I wasn't aware that we had areas accessible like this, could you also PM me the details of locations too please?

I am unfortunately across the other side of the country but my parents live within an or so drive so I can always (after persuading the mrs) go off on a jaunt myself :)

Thanks!

Thanks Kona77........yes it would make a good 'Photography' part of any vacation........if you do plan a trip......don't hesitate to ask any relevant questions........I have been thinking about acting as 'Guide' to anyone who is coming over from overseas...both in organising a Low flying trip and advising on the Photography side aswell......I have met quite a few Photographers new to this subject and you will surprised how good there Images are even after a couple of days shooting..........its a challenging subject and a very rewarding one aswell.........Cheers Barry

Hi mate, not sure where in Cumbria but if you look at:

www.lowfly.net (http://www.lowfly.net) there is a link to the Cumbria Homepage and there it will tell you all you need to know. There should be a link somewhere to the MOD site where they have the times booked for different low fly areas...I think it is fairly hit or miss though if you get anything but I am sure the walk and views would be great.

Good luck if you go and let us see if you get any shots :)
