I wait an answer only from the ones wich have 40D or 5D!I intend to buy a new and better body (I have now a 350D). You'll ask me what am I gonna do with this camera. I know the topics about FF vs 1.6 crop (sport, wildlife, landscape, portraits, bla bla). The most important thing for me is IMAGE QUALITY. I read that at 1600 ISO... the 5D still performs acceptable and very good pictures. But it looks that he is vignetting even with the 24-70/2.8 L. I don't care about 5fps or live-view.My gear:12-24/4 tokina 24-70/2.8 L canon 70-200/2.8 L canon I wait for your opinion... and thank you anticipated!(Sorry for my bad english)

40d is for amateurs and 5D ìs for semi proffessionals, so what do you intend
for sport any good second hand 1D mark II is also an ( better) option

For sports and wildlife, 40D. For landscape and portraits, 5D. Sounds like you need to purchase one of each! ;)

having played with both and owning one, if you're looking for better IQ i'd say the 5D would be better suited for your needs. i like the 40D for the speed, AF, and price, but if none of that is a big issue for you, the 5D is an excellent choice.
as for vreeke's comment, just bear in mind that a good camera doesn't make a good photographer. they both serve different functions and to say that the 40D is an amateur's tool is simply ill-informed.

You'll find many amateurs and pro shooters using the 20/30/40D & 5D, and just as many amateurs using the 1D series as pros. The image quality from all of these is perfectly acceptable for pro work, the difference is not everyone knows how to use them.

i think that its all about budget, the problem that many people don't realize is that, if a photog is running a business, he/she must stay with in a profit margin, where a hobbyist can just get what ever their other job can afford.
so just because you have a 40d, and not a 1d, means your not profitable to get a 1d
