Today I went to the botanical garden. I took a few butterfly pics and put on the 100-400mm IS lens and went looking for some birds. I was standing at a bridge waiting for any action when up rolls a nice gentleman who asked "What is THAT lens?" Well I explained what it was and how the IS helped take pics. I told him that I would come there and take 2-400 pics and spend a couple of days on the computer processing them. This nice gentleman looked at me with a sad look on his face and said "You need to get a life!" and rolled off in his powered wheel chair. I could hear his wife fussing at him for his remark as they walked away           I started to take his pic but what the heck...
So just remember photography is not EVERYTHING!

how can he make comments like that based on a 10 minutes chat with you? That's just rude!
If i were you, i'd tell him to get a pair of legs.

Well, seems like that gentleman is bitter at somebody. Maybe just you? Maybe the whole world? :?
Pitty the wife, huh?

I have a life.. it seems to involve this thing called photography...
What do you do in your spare time? What's your passion? Anything?

Some people don't realize how much life photography involves. Getting out, seeing new things, looking for new things, taking a hike, trying new things (like glider planes, right Jerry?), and so on and so on. We just use the cheap excuse of taking pictures as the excuse to get out and do something. I have more "life" now than I did a year ago, thanks to photography.
I've never been to Canada before photography. (8 more days!) I never saw a bald eagle in the wild. Or an Osprey. Or a semi-palmated plover even! In 40 years of living near Boston I never went to the zoo. I went three times this year - outside, fresh air, walking around, seeing the animals. I've traveled all over New England looking for places to photograph, visiting places I'd never even heard of before photography.
"Get a life" indeed!
I have a life. AND pictures to prove it!

Really?
Lets follow a logic here:
Got a camera?
Put it down. Go to the sports events, the wedding, the car boot sales or even just go out to the hills for the day. Go and see the birds, the trees, the flowers and savour the moment,
But don't photograph it?
Na, not me. Photography is a way of life... :D :D :D
but just not for some

okay, i admitted it, it was harsh, even in a jokingly manner. But if there is no respect from other people, then clearly they don't deserve mine.

so sad...
But i blaim only the fact that they don't understand. My family kind of accepted me with a camera in my hand... there are a few who start making jokes when they see me with all my gear hanging from my neck.
But how are you supposed to look at a beautiful landscape, bird, etc.. and not photograph it.

This is a classic!
If I were you Scottes, I'd use it as...what is it called (where people put their list of the gear they have).

(ok, you are laughing now)

The difference with competitive shooting is that he most likely would not have made that comment (at least not to your face) if you had just explained your AR-15 to him
You might mention that you use photography to balance your shooting hobbies
Best regards,
Andy

Or carry around some favorite pictures to show off. Like a picture of a target from a 1000-yard range. Or 5 holes in the 10 circle from the pistol range.

Yep. I still have my best target somewhere. 5 rounds from a .308, but the hole looks more like a single 9mm.

To avoid the royalties, I skip your few words :P
Well, I absolutely agree with you. I appreciate the great nature from photography. Even without taking pictures, I'd be happy to watch beautiful scenes, creatures... Is that part of the life?
